It's Shax's all time favorite run ever! (ducks and runs for cover...) -M edit to add: Shax did a review thread on it in the old place, not sure if he saved it, but Uncle Walt even popped in for a post or three)

He found it....disappointing after all the hype it gets. I love the run myself, but I am a pretty big Simonson fan.

Giving the whole thing a chance, I just loved the run as a whole. I do have to say I still don't really get the love for the Beta Ray Bill arc; it's a good story but not what I personally consider great. But horses for courses. (heeheehee.)

One of the best comic runs ever. Also responsible for me getting into Marvel (and comics in general to a degree), as Thor #351 was my first Marvel comic. You can do a lot worse than Simonson's Ragnarok epic as an introduction to comics.

I was going to chime in with "the first person to bring me into this..." but was apparently far too late.

One of my brothers hardly read comics but when I introduced him to Simonson Thor he loved it.
Yeah, that was a really good run.

I was getting a tattoo a few weeks ago and one of the other tattooers and I were talking about Simonson Thor. He's not a regular comic reader, but he loves that run.
What that means, I don't know

I love Simonson's run on Thor (as well as his later work on Orion)
As a kid, the art was different from what I was used to.. I found it dynamic and intriguing, it was definitely a big part of the draw. I also enjoyed Walt's storylines and deft handling of subplots which he built up over multiple issues. Each issue left me eagerly anticipating the next one, particularly as the storyline built up to Ragnarok. I liked the action sequences and the humor (Volstagg, Thor's secret ID, the whole frog saga).
I've reread the run many times, probably most recently 3-4 years back, and still enjoy it. But then I do have a soft spot for 80s comics so I'm probably viewing thru rose-colored glasses. Reading classic comic runs for the 1st time as an adult just isn't the same experience as reading issue by issue as a kid and having that month between to wonder what will happen next.
That being said, I find that when you hear lots of hype about something for awhile and from lots of people, its hard for the actual product to live up to the hype. (most recent example for me would be LSH Great Darkness Saga, which I enjoyed a lot but wouldn't say was the greatest thing ever). I try to tamp down my expectations and if I can, I'm often pleasantly surprised rather than let down.
Definitely one of my all time favorite runs, and I haven't enjoyed Thor as much since Walt's time on the title.

Im trying to reread these(slowly) now, but they can be a slog, very wordy, like a mythic Claremont. I do remember being underwhelmed by Bill back in the day, but enjoying the run more as it went on. Still to see if this holds true now.

I'm not a huge fan either. Simonson's '70s Japanesese influenced stuff is somea my favorite comic art, but his work from the '80s just looks sloppy. Plus Thor is always boring. The major theme of Thor is hitting things, and sometimes shooting lightning at things, and also hitting things again!
I did like all the parts with the more nuanced, non-Thor characters though!

I took a big chance buying the omnibus for $90 a couple years ago. Boy was it worth it.
