Published: March thru April 2001 Synopsis: "It takes more than a pair of swords to be a samurai, and this is something Usagi knows well. Our furry friend and his comrade, Gen, have wandered into a town dominated by two rival gangs, and in a scheme to break the gangs' power, they each join a rival faction. When up against a formidable enemy, it can sometimes be wise to infiltrate your foe and learn of his intentions, but Usagi's plans go astray, and it's trouble for our fuzzy samurai friends. I loved the reveal that Gen gave his bounty money to Ikeda's family but the adaptation of Yojimbo was a little thin.

I loved the reveal that Gen gave his bounty money to Ikeda's family. Perhaps the most compelling Gen moment to date. Stan reveals so much more about him in these little moments of sincerity and vulnerability than in his original origin story.

First appearance of Shizukiri at the end of this story, and it's a great little scene. When I first read it, I thought Shizukiri must have something supernatural about him to stare down Usagi. But no, he's just a steely-eyed killer. His next appearance is not until the depressing but still very good UY #95.
I also want to express my admiration for the covers to these issues. Such an idyllic moment and much more visually interesting than the usual group photo or student body right compositions used when an artist draws so many characters. Actually cheers me up to look at them.

I absolutely love some of the art in this story. Usagi's face throughout the conversation of Gen's reveal of what he did with the money. It goes through so many beautiful emotions.

Gen all soft and mushy behind the gruff rhino hide in which he hides in. The reveal of Gen's kinder side is something which works well here after his appearances over time as Usagi's partner. It shows Stan truly has thought out and understands his characters as the idea of Gen's big heart wouldn't have worked so well if revealed immediately or sooner. We have grown to love this gruff conniving money grubbing bounty hunter and in the revelation over time with him assisting Usagi and spending for drinks and meals when Usagi hasn't any money it is an ahhhhhhh moment in knowing there is a real reason Usagi might associate with such a rude, vulgar brute and consider him a true friend.
With Gen and Ussagi playing the bosses off each other you can see just how well the 2 act together and understand one another. Thought it was hilarious when they charge each other and the gangs expecting them to fight and they rush past each other to attack the mob gangs. Careful who you place your bets on!
