Published: August 2002 Synopsis: "The time for the Duel at Kitanoji has finally arrived! While getting there has been a fight in and of itself, it's nothing compared to what's in store for Usagi's former sensei Katsuichi and the deadly Nakamura Koji as they square off to see who's the better swordsman. While both are noble and honorable samurai, bushido, the Warriors' Code, demands that only one of them walk away alive. This is the story that Stan Sakai has been building up to since Usagi Yojimbo #7, and it looks to rock Usagi's world forever!" Notes: Death of Koji Jotoro begins travelling with Usagi Discuss the issue and/or post full reviews below!

I was disappointed to see Koji die, I really liked his friendship with Usagi and was hoping to see it grow but I'm glad we're getting a lot more Jotaro.

I was disappointed to see Koji die, I really liked his friendship with Usagi and was hoping to see it grow but I'm glad we're getting a lot more Jotaro. Koji's not as multi-dimensional as other characters. He's the ideal of bushi, and he follows it until it kills him. Usagi and Katsuichi admire him for it, and I don't really blame them. This story wouldn't be nearly as dramatic if Koji and Katsuichi merely conked each other with wooden swords, but I'd have also liked to see Koji stick around. On another note, Koji looks like he was modeled on Clint Eastwood.

On another note, Koji looks like he was modeled on Clint Eastwood. Wow. Hadn't considered that before. Obviously, there's an acknowledged parallel between the classic samurai and Western films. Makes total sense that Stan was channelling Eastwood on purpose.

I was flip-flopping all the way until I drew the end as to who would die--Koji or Katsuichi. As soon as I sent it in to Dark Horse I emailed Editor Diana to read the story. She was so sure that Katsuichi would be the loser.

This story was a big part of why I started reading Usagi. I saw a panel from this on some comic news site, where it showed Koji and Katsuichi from above, facing each other as the sun rose and their shadows stretched out behind them, just before the duel. A beautiful panel. I picked up my first issue shortly after.
