At this point I am actively considering buying a PS4 in addition to the Xbox one I already own. The price for these has been dropping and I really want to play all the uncharted games. But what is really making me consider it is the new Spider-man game coming out for it in the not to distant future. Spider-man for the PS2 was the main reason I bought that console back in the day and that and Spider-man 2 are still some of my favourite games. If this game really is as good as it sounds I might have to get it.

On the subject of old games, I am finding it's hard to go back much further than PS3/360/Wii. PS1 makes an exception, with at least most of the games I own, but I understand that is complete nostalgia on my part. I can recognize Cloud stumbles around on the open world map like a drunk because of that tank d-pad. But I can enjoy it despite it. The GBA Castlevania and Metroid games are still good to me too, but I play them on my GC via the gameboy player. Yeah, if you're already familiar with them and have nostalgia it's much easier to get back into it, but games from then that I have never played before can be a real challenge. Well, the 3D ones anyway. Games made in the 2D style or RPGs I think stand up much better because the tech to run those was already old hat by then and fairly polished from previous console generations. Yeah, I don't blame you. Unless you're big on multiplayer on the current BIGNAME GAME, INC. there's no compelling rush. Prices on One/PS4 are likely to keep falling, and the Switch does have exclusive IP if you're into Nintendo. I can't personally justify it right now since I don't really travel, and my kid is way too young to care about gaming yet, so I'm good with my PC and Wii U. Shoot, I haven't even finished my PS3 games I have, ha. I think I've read that PS3/XB360 is considered by many the golden age of consoles from a consumer perspective due to the volume of great games and the systems being powerful enough for good graphics/gameplay, etc, really long console lifecycle, etc. Personally, it helps that the graphics are good enough I don't feel like it's a super dated relic and the creature comforts with saving, etc, are pretty well polished by this point. It'd be great to see a game of comparable quality with modern polish.

I would say that, so far, the 360/PS3 generation is my favorite. There were a ton of great games in that era, and the consoles were powerful enough that the graphics still look good to me (I think Mirror's Edge looks better than a lot of games nowadays, and it came out 7 years ago!) Another big factor for me is the convenience. Games in the current generation have to update so often, which can get kind of annoying. It's nice to just be able to play an Xbox 360 game without having to worry about any of that.

Playing as tiny spider-man or as the green goblin was great fun to. Totally different kind of game with the goblin. ASM 2 was so great a game if you like to play games where you can swing around as Spidey.

However one big plus I will say in favour of Xbox one is the fact that it is backwards compatable with a whole bunch of 360 games in addition to its own games. And they are adding to that each month so its a great way to still play those older games on top of new ones. If you already own the disks, like I did when I bought mine, just pop them in and it will download and install them.

Yeah multiplayer is not a thing for me. My kids will play some online, but now that PS3 has to pay for online, I don't pay for it every month, maybe just when he gets a new game his friends have. But they are big fans of a lot of Nintendo's IP's between Mario, Link, Smash Bros, and Pokemon, a Switch would be ideal. I'd just like to wait till some of the issues I've been reading are ironed out. Now that you say, that I've had a 360 for 9 years now, and I just keep finding games that are entertaining and fun, faster than I can play them. The Wii was a lot like that too, when we first got it, with all the Nintendo IP's as well as games that helped my boys learn gaming, as that was really their "learning" console, though they played my N64 and GC too before the Wii. It's pretty crazy thinking how long the 360 lasted and was supported by Microsoft. And being that my boys are Halo fans I am sure when it comes down to the price I am willing to pay we'll get a One at some point, because the backwards compatibility just makes it even more worth the purchase.

The One has fallen in price recently, but it might fall even more when they officially announce and have a release date for project scorpion which is going to be the "pro" version of it.

I don't think I'll ever get an Xbox or a Plastation. They have plenty of games which I want, but all of those games are on the PC as well. It's not like the PS1/N64 days where each console offered a very different experience from each other and from the PC and so it was worth owning them all. Nowadays I feel that the only consoles with worthwhile exclusive content are Nintendo.
In terms of it being hard to go back to older games, in some cases I see that, like Goldeneye or any 3D PS1 title that didn't use analog sticks. But Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and FF7 hold up well from a gameplay perspective. It's just the graphics that have aged. And many of the SNES classics haven't aged at all.
A lot of games from the PS2 era have aged very well, even their graphics. Okami, Rogue Leader, Shadow of the Colossus, RE4, Metroid Prime all stll look and play very well.

It's mostly early 3D games that suffer the worst though there are exceptions. Mario 64 as you say. Shoot, they could rerelease it today with an HD graphics makeover and not change the gameplay at all and I'd be happy.

I recently played Metroid Prime a few months back (actually still stuck on the Omega Pirate) and it's amazing how good the graphics and detailed the environments were for a game that's 15 years old.
Those are the games I go back too. Because I am so much about the visual experience at this point in gaming. I take notice of my environments and marvel at some the of the hard work the "forgotten" people do on games, that in the absence of (*cough*Bullet Witch*cough*) make for a less enjoying game, even if the game play and mechanics are top notch. So when games "wow" me like that, I end up playing them a lot. It's a BIG reason why Wind Waker is my favorite Zelda game at this point. Though I may change me tune this weekend when I get to play BotW. :-)

I'm just kidding and I wouldn't know. The last Zelda I played through was A Link to the Past on SNES so I missed everything in between.

I think the cell shading of Wind Waker fits it really well. More so than Skyward Sword. I did like the dark take on Twilight Princess though. Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask just have not aged well. I've never played a 2D Zelda game. Though I have one on a GC compilation. I just haven't given it a go.
