Speaking of female characters, I just remembered a series that I haven't seen in years -- Bubblegum Crisis. It came out in the early 90s I believe. From what I remember, it was sort of a riff on Blade Runner, with a team of female vigilantes who pilot motorcycle mecha suits. If the latter sounds familiar, it's because Shinji Aramaki, the designer of the Cyclone/Ride Armor from Robotech/Mospeada also worked on Bubblegum, and he was fond of motorcycles.

shax, for a mecha series that combines action and romance, might I suggest 'The Vision of Escaflowne' somewhere down the line? It's slightly over a decade younger than Macross and Gundam, and its setting is a bit different (much of it takes place in a late-medieval styled world), but its mainly unusual in that its main protagonist is not the mecha pilot, but a girl with precognitive talents. And it features quite a strong soap opera/romance angle. The first episode starts a bit slow, but once you're about 15 minutes in, it kicks into gear. I think it has a great mix of romance, drama, fantasy, and action. Speaking of female characters, I just remembered a series that I haven't seen in years -- Bubblegum Crisis. These both sound like excellent suggestions. Do they have good voice dubs? One other concern as we move into more recent anime that might not have children as their target audience -- violence and sexual content. Ellie is very squeemish, even at the sight of animated blood, and (of course) anything more sexual than Roy Fokker pulling Claudia onto his bed, followed by a cut-away, would be too much. Do these make the grade in those respects?

By the way, we're up to Robotech: The Masters now. I'd completely forgotton how grating the voice actor for Dana Sterling is

My memories of Bubblegum Crisis are fan service-y.. you might want to check it by yourself first, Shax.

Escaflowne is modest enough to just feature kissing and holding hands and go no further. But in terms of violence, it treads the line; it cuts away from more gruesome injuries, but it does show quite a bit of blood in many battle scenes. So, like wildfire, I'd say it might be a good idea to view a couple of eps by yourself first; the first couple episodes are representative of the whole show, it doesn't intensify in violence as it goes along like some shows do.

I saw Bubblegum Crisis with subs, but I'm sure there's probably a dubbed version out there since it's a pretty old series. I don't remember there being sexual content, aside from a few scenes of brief nudity that's not atypical for anime, but it might be a tad violent for your daughter. Like others have said, check it out and see what you think.

Sounds like both series would be better "down the road" with my daughter.

Sounds like both series would be better "down the road" with my daughter. You may well well run into some nudity at some point... fan service has a long anime tradition, and it's often thrown into a single episode at the most random of times.. if you see a scene heading towards the beach, shower, lake, or locker room... you might want to fast forward

Though not nearly every series features one of those. shax, do you usually watch anime dubbed or subbed? I understand you'd want to seek out an English dub for your daughter. Escaflowne seems to have an all right English dub (it had 2, Bandai and Funimation; I saw clips of the former, but Funi tends to put out quality voice work as well)

I don't know, I think they all pretty much have one... I mean, even Full Metal Alchemist had a tub scene (No nudity, but still)
Funimation definitely has the best voice actors, IMO.. I just wish they had a few more... it's a little odd when the voices are so similar to characters in other series!

I don't watch much of anything (anime or otherwise), for that matter. For myself, if the dub is well done, then that is what I prefer. Otherwise, I don't mind subs.

By the way, we're up to Robotech: The Masters now. I'd completely forgotton how grating the voice actor for Dana Sterling is But we luvvvvvvvv the clone triumvirates' voices. Almost Soundwave-like in a way. Long-time Robotech fan but I could write pages on the arguments and rants I've participated in over the years about the pros and cons of that cartoon. Suffice it to say, huge kudos to Macek for being able to complete the saga in the first place. That being said, loved Macross Plus. The characters, the fighter designs, still have my CD copy of Yoko Kanno's soundtrack which I about know by heart. Macross II was interesting, a different tact taken with the characters and I did like the VF designs. Question though, how are you able to watch Macross 7 or Frontier? HG blocks most if not all of Macross imports and all I've ever seen of either anime if Blu-ray discs with no subs or dubs at all. I would at least love to watch Frontier. What's the consensus on Gundam Wing? I used to love that show, the characters and the mecha. Somewhat heavy on the war vs peace moral debate but still enjoyable. Star Blazers is a classic space opera but I'd go for the more recent Space Battleship Yamato 2199. It's available dubbed and it's an amazing update to the concept.

There's a clause in the ProBoards agreement preventing us from discussing illegal activity on this site, but, suffice to say, when (and only when) there is no legal way to obtain a series or movie in The States, I find another way

String: For U.S. fans to enjoy Macross releases state-side, you don't really have any good legal options. If you're in the U.S., unless you understand Japanese and purchased a legal copy of the DVD or Blu-Ray release and shipped it over here, there isn't a legal way to view them. There are fansubbed versions available of all the releases, of varying quality, and available in places that probably aren't too hard for you too find if you know where to look. Since the Japanese distributors cannot legally make the video releases available here in the U.S., you can probably guess why they don't bother having English subs.
That said, there's a pretty decent-sized fan community for Macross in the U.S., and plenty of us have seen all the releases in English, so it's not that hard to find ways.
Shax: If your daughter ever gets comfortable with subtitled videos, I think she'd enjoy Macross Frontier. Content-wise, I'd give it a PG rating. There's no nudity, though one of the female characters is very obviously, ridiculously well-endowed, and another character sometimes wears skimpy clothing (but she's a pop star and the outfits are her stage costumes). Violence-wise, it's about what you'd expect for a sci-fi show with lots of space battles, i.e., mostly vehicular violence rather than physical. What it has going for it is the soap opera/love triangle, which is a main part of the plot. It's also has a bunch of catchy J-Pop. I'm told that those two aspects have made the show popular with young Japanese girls. And of course, there's the mecha action. I'd say these two clips give you a pretty good sense of what to expect.
