I didn't go to see The Purge: Anarchy because I haven't gotten around to seeing the first one yet (which I heard, was reviled, which is why I didn't bother). But do I need to in order to follow this one? I'm like....looking for a horror movie to see  Apparently you do not need to see the first one. As long as you know that the government allows a day where people can commit murder and horrible crimes, I have heard the second has different people and a different plot as a whole. |

I watched Beneath the Planet of the Apes last night, the sequel to the '68 original. I had never seen it before. I enjoyed the scene where they discover the ruins of New York underground, reminded me of the Statue of Liberty scene in the first one. It was really weird to see Charlton Heston disappear at the beginning of the movie and then reappear at the ending, with another astronaut filling in in-between. But the ending blew me away (no pun intended). So that's it then? Wow. Fox begged Heston to return for an Apes sequel, and he ultimately agreed to on two conditions: 1. He didn't want to be in most of the film. Maybe just at the beginning and then show up again at the end. 2. He wanted to blow up the planet so that there wouldn't be an opportunity for any more sequels. In my mind, Beneath is the worst of the original films, but it gives off a hokey B-movie vibe that I find endearing. I just can't take it seriously, though. I thought this was the third in the series, but yeah it was a low point. Was this the one with the underground purple people? It was fun though. I used to have the whole set. |

I'll probably see The Battle of Five Armies if I get around to watching the first two before it comes out. Other than that, the stuff I'd want to see usually doesn't come within 100 miles of here.

I thought this was the third in the series, but yeah it was a low point. Was this the one with the underground purple people? It was fun though. I used to have the whole set. That's the one. I think the third film was my favorite, I think it best captured the satire of the original novel...plus the Apes in 70's pop culture was just funny. |

What was the story again on the Avengers? I mean why it changed from Avengers vs Thanos to Avengers vs Ultron - or was any explanation ever given?
Beneath the Planet of the Apes is the first of the series I saw and I rank it 2nd after the original. I'm sure that's partly because I saw it at the theatre at an impressionable age, but I really do think it's far and away superior to the later ones, which are all fun but increasingly self-indulgent and sort of makeshift.

Maybe they decided to use Thanos in GotG and thus had to switch to another villain for Avengers 2. |

Thanos is not the villain of GotG, but his presence is behind a lot of what will happen, as it was in the first Avengers. It eventually culminates with Avengers 3, where the Avengers will finally confront Thanos. They're doing a slow burn on the Thanos story. Intro to his machinations in Avengers, further those machinations in GoTG, then culminate in Avengers 3. Marvel Studios has 2-3 movies per year planned out well into the 2020s so there's a lot of stories to tell, so they are building some as B and C plots in the movies as they did in the classic days of Marvel comics.
