I'm having a hard time thinking of a modern comedy that attained more than mediocrity. The Birdcage is now more than 15 years old, but it is the most modern comedy I can think of that I've watched again and again. To me, it doesn't seem to have aged a day. The subject matter is perhaps even more relevant now than during its initial run. The writing is sharp and full of heart. I think it's a top-notch farce with a stellar cast. I agree that The Birdcage is fantastic, and it's right in that zone of when comedies were still really good. 1996, so..19 years old? I think after the mid-90s and around 2000 is when movies went down. Great flick.

The best part of Tropic Thunder is the fake trailers at the beginning. It's pretty much downhill from there. I thought it was okay, but would have been much funnier had it been made in 1987 when Ben Stiller originally came up with the idea. Spoofing 80's war movies just wasn't quite as timely in 2008. I agree 100% and have said nearly those exact words. The movie had occasional moments I laughed at, but overall was so bland. The fake trailers and Tom Cruise's character were great, but not enough to pad out the other 2 hours. I do enjoy Stiller in supporting and straight roles, though. He is hilarious in Heavyweights. I tend to be very picky about comedies, and I've observed a sharp decline in comedies since the mid 90s. It might be just me getting older, but there seems to be far less craft and effort put into them now. While they used to have full stories and flow like every other movie and just also jokes, lately they just feel like someone came up barely enough plot to have and excuse to film allegedly "funny" actors free styling for hours and they cut together a movie from the results. Compare, say, the original Ace Ventura, or Beverly Hills Cop or Coming to America with any comedy in the last 20 years and fine me one with as much care in making it a movie instead of a collection of gags and riffing. I haven't come across one. I found the first Hangover moderately more interesting than boring, but not enough to see the second two. Bridesmaids was okay. Pineapple Express was okay... Superbad was all right. I'm having a hard time thinking of a modern comedy that attained more than mediocrity. This just feels like one of those generational things to me, as I'm sure we'd get the same from an older crowd about comedies being inherently better in say the 70's than any other time since.

I can't wait to see this! I still need to see Quantum of Solace and Skyfall. Quantum of Solace is okay, though it feels like more of an extra two hours of Casino Royale, and Skyfall was excellent so long as you can over look the absurdity of the villain's plan.

I found Tropic Thunder pretty good, as that type of comedy goes. The idea of dumb, self-absorbed Hollywood actors in over their heads is funny enough, Downer was good, as usual, and the crude humour worked better than it often does.

I did get to watch one movie this weekend, while doing laundry, Alien Abduction (2014). A found footage film about the disapperance of entire family when they going camping in the Brown Mountains in North Carolina, which are known for UFO's. It being an obsession/fear of mine, I knew sooner or later I would watch it. It get directly to the point, and is fast paced. It's not overly violent or gory, but it does have some distrubing images in it. After getting spooked once that I audibly screamed loud enough for my wife came into check on me, I watched most of the "I knew were going to be spook parts" through my fingers. Though I could sit through this and watch it again, it doesn't have the depth and character building like say Fire In The Sky does. It's meant to be a scary shock film. But the back story of the Brown Mountain Lights is really a hot spot for UFO activity. Whether that's extraterrestrials, the government, or people's imagination, is left up for you to decide. But if you like scary movies, don't mind aliens, it's worth watching for an hour and a half. It's on Nexflix instant.

I found Tropic Thunder pretty good, as that type of comedy goes. The idea of dumb, self-absorbed Hollywood actors in over their heads is funny enough, Downer was good, as usual, and the crude humour worked better than it often does. I liked it a lot too. I even owned it for a while and so I've watched it a few times.
I agree that the fake trailers are non-stop HILARIOUS for however long they are on, and that the movie is seldom that funny for an extended period of time after that. But it's still pretty damn funny. Anything that has references to Tugg Speedman's movie "Simple Jack" is hilarious, whether it's the clip from the film or the live performance for the drug lords or Kirk Lazarus (Downey) and the "never go full retard" speech.
And whenever Kirk Lazarus talks about acting or his method, that's pretty darn funny.
And OMG! that bit at the end where that huge explosion makes everyone deaf, a film technique that has been in almost every war movie since 1970, and Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black) is shouting a muffled "MY ASS! MY ASS!" in the background.
Nowadays, whenever I see an action movie where an explosion makes everyone deaf, I imagine one of the characters screaming "MY ASS! MY ASS!"

The movie Ex Machina opens in a few days and I was surprised. not hearing about the adaptation of Brian Vaughn's old Wildstorm comic. But no, it seems to be an original SF story from the writer of 28 Days Later. Looks good though
