Looks like Legendary has acquired the movie and TV rights to Frank Herbert's Dune... Variety articleI know there is some mixed feelings about Dune among the sci-fi fans here, but I am hoping something exciting emerges out of this. It won't be Jodo cool, but maybe we'll get something of worth out of this. -M

The big short is a movie we should all see, and it's very well crafted to boot.
But darn, do we get out of it angry...

Please no. No. No. No. Not another crappy remake of an amazing Carpenter film. The others were bad enough. We don't need another crappy remake of one of my favorite movies of all time. Carpenter made so many of my favorite films in the 70's and 80's. Snake has his real name revealed? No we don't need that. I like the mystery of the character. That and other changes I can live without.

We saw Fantastic Beasts today. My wife is a fan of Rowling's work so was willing to go to a first-run theater for a change. We thoroughly enjoyed it. She has a biology background, and I've never seen her laugh so hard at a movie as she did during the mating dance with the magical hippo creature.
We plan to see Dr. Strange and Moana soon. There was a very positive review of Moana on the Atomic Junk Shop site last week.

My wife and I watched Central Intelligence last night and had a lot of good laughs. Unless you don't like Kevin Hart of Dwayne Johnson's acting, I'd imagine you'd like it. Nice, fairly, family friendly comedy. Male rear nudity is all I can think of that one might find inappropriate. And it's not in any sexual context. We were laughing enough our son came in our room to see what all the hub bub was.

Now THAT's good news!!! Villeneuve and Terence Mallick were about the only directors I could think of for a new Dune movie.

That is good news, I hope he really goes out there in capturing the feel if dune. I thought the scifi mini series did a pretty decent job so my hopes are high

There's some things to like about it, and some things not to like, but overall there's a reason it's a cult classic rather than a major sci fi film milestone or a memorable cultural touchstone. It sacrificed substance for style and missed the mark as a narrative story. -M

Being gorgeous to look at isn't a shallow reason to like a movie, in my book. It's a visual medium, so the visual impact is as important as the story, ect. Of course it should all work together, ideally, but just as there are some comics I rate highly just for the artwork, even if the writing is only fair-to-middling, there are movies I like mainly for the visual imagery, cinematography, camera work, editing, etc.

Today I saw Nocturnal Animals. Easily my favorite movie of the year. There's a lot of meat on its bones, both narratively and thematically. I'll be thinking about this film and the ways it resonated with me for days afterwards.

Alien: Covenant... the trailer is up!
It looks like a retread of Alien and Aliens, but hey... it's still Ridley Scott.
