Saw John Wick 2 yesterday. A true orchestrational movement of elegant violence it is. Spectacularly staged fights and gun fu styling with minimalist plot (not that it is needed or required) that shows how you can spend extra money wisely upon a sequel without ruining it. Superb guest appearances and everything just works in this fictional world of assassination's code of honor and rules. Cannot wait for part 3 to see how they solve and play it all out. Best scene in movie is Wick with the Somalia sampling his wares. Just a fun turn your mind off, enjoy the mayhem and fisticuffs and release your own angers. Wick epitomizes what many of us likely think and feel and wish we could really do in our own "work" lives. I saw it yesterday with my youngest son and it was a lot of fun. Non-stop action, but it really never got tiring. And, yeah, the scene with the Sommelier was absolutely incredible. Super fun. Saw John Wick 2 and liked it a lot. Keanu's wooden acting works well in this kind of role, for me. It's all action, pretty evenly divided between the gun fights and the hand to hand combat. I would have liked it if there were less of the guns and more of the straight martial arts fights (not that there was any shortage of those), but that's just me: I just don't have much feeling for cinematic gun-play and it's rare that I get anything out of it, no matter how brilliantly choreographed - in terms of film aesthetics, I mean; I'm not making any comment on real life gun-culture or whatever. I felt the same way about The Matrix - another Keanu movie, coincidentally. But good action movie and, like the first one, more stylistically interesting than it'll probably get credit for. I'll be keeping an eye on the director, Chad Stahelski, who is I see a former stuntman. That's interesting - have there been any other stuntmen who became directors?

There have been a few, Hal Needham is probably the most accomplished example of it though. -M

I would have thrown Vic Armstrong's name out there, but upon actually looking at his credits, realized that he never really made it over to the director's chair on as much as I thought he did. Although he a ton of Assistant Director/Second Unit Director credits.

Has anyone seen Logan? All I can say is, WOW. I really enjoyed the R-Rated take on an aging Logan. Certainly not a happy story and not for kids, but I thought it was really good!

Quite the grand finale for Jackman and Stewart to end on i thought. Really good story with some typical movie flaws/lapses in logic just because the script required them but overall wonderful to see something different in the form of a comic book movie choosing to NOT follow current trends. Violence which was very realistic and expected from heroes who have claws and children fighting for their lives. Strong emotional notes that hit hard. Splendid acting so kudo's to all involved!!!

And now for something completely different: looking forward to Kong: Skull Island this weekend! Previews have me excited and waiting with anticipation for the King of Apes strutting his big hairy behind across the screen. Has got to be better and more entertaining than Jackson's Kong.

Today I saw Nocturnal Animals. Easily my favorite movie of the year. There's a lot of meat on its bones, both narratively and thematically. I'll be thinking about this film and the ways it resonated with me for days afterwards. Saw this a few weeks back myself. Yes, an excellent movie. I thought Michael Shannon was particularly good: best "tough cop" performance I've seen for a long time. If he isn't already known for that kind of role I wouldn't be surprised if he started getting cast in similar parts in the future, he was so impressive in this one.

I hope you are right and I'm looking forward seeing it next week with friends.

I must admit to being interested in The Great Wall which I'll see when it hits the multiplex. That's the first time I've read someone say they actually wanted to see that film of their own free will.

Great action movie combo with wonderful Chinese historical martial arts kung-fooery blending with American summer style action/horror/humor. And it worked very well. Damon gets to be Captain America and Hawkeye and Conan all in one movie! How could you pass that up in a movie?!?

I really dislike the way they're playing Mantis in the previews for Guardians 2.

I thoroughly enjoyed this commentary on Arrival. It's made by someone who really knows cinema, obviously, and his technical analysis is quite enlightening.

Saw Kong: Skull Island on Saturday. What a perfect afternoon popcorn cruncher of a movie! Full of action and story with plenty of big ol' monkey shenanigans! Now this is how you make a monster movie. Hope the next american Godzilla movie makers take note. They even captured the whole Vietnam war movie vibe to perfection. And Sgt Fury...oops i mean Samuel L. Jackson was war loving and revenge psychotic perfection.
Plenty of interesting human action mixed in with great monster creations and monster fights. This is a well spent $8 movie. Kong is everything you want him to be here, humongous, athletic, sympathetic and when confronted, down right formidable and horrifying from a human perspective. This is a must get on DVD or Bluray when it is time!
Rated 10 banana's for certain!!!
