Saw Ghost in the Shell this weekend and outside of wonderful and very cool visual effects the movie was absolutely lifeless. Rather blah acting from everyone involved. The anime did it sooooo much better. What should have been able to be home run was a bunt. Makes you wonder why the need to do this into a live action movie if it was being done seemingly by rote and by the numbers. Hollywood: go figure.

I thoroughly enjoyed this commentary on Arrival. It's made by someone who really knows cinema, obviously, and his technical analysis is quite enlightening. I clicked on the link and then didn't watch the video because I keep going back and forth on whether I want to see Arrival or not. have you read the Ted Chiang story it's based on? I have doubts it can be translated to the screen - though that doesn't mean a good movie couldn't be made from using it as inspiration.

Still not sure I'll see this live-action Ghost in the Shell, partly because "blah" is exactly how I would describe Scarlet Johanson's acting in the Avengers movies. OTOH, she was good in a small part in the Coen brothers' Hail Caesar!, so I think she was just miscast as the Black Widow, apart from looking good in the costume.

I just saw the latest Olivier Assayas movie, Personal Shopper and was pretty knocked out by it. Didn't know anything about this one going in except that it was mostly in English and had an American lead, both of which made me a bit leery of seeing it at all, but of course I should have known better. I'm starting to think Assayas doesn't know how to make a bad movie, because there hasn't been a single dud out of the 5 or 6 I've seen by him over the years.

It's a cerebral version of Close Encounters and thankfully no mash potato mountains. Have not read the original story and I'm sure it clears up certain points but i easily recommend watching the film version

I really dislike the way they're playing Mantis in the previews for Guardians 2. I only know her from the Abnett and Lanning's run on Guardians and what little we've seen in the trailers she seems dead on.

That's one of the reasons I've steered clear of the otherwise highly-praised Abnett/Lanning Guardians comics.

Much as I disliked her in those old Avengers comics, I quickly grew to love Mantis in Annihilation:conquest and Guardians of the galaxy. She was so emotionally well-balanced and mature, it made for a nice contrast with her more brash and usually thoughtless partners in adventure.

Mature isn't how she comes across to me in the movie preview, though - they have her talking in this little-girl voice that always grates on me when it's coming from a grown woman.

I agree; the preview seems to emphasize her weirdness over her self-control. The PTB probably want her to be exotic and strange first, and whatever else second. Their Drax is also a one note character, far removed from the no nonsense bruiser from the comic. Even Knowledge was simplified from a cosmic meeting place for alien civilizations to a mining operation.

No, I haven't read it yet... but without knowing how true the film is to the original story, I still find it to be remarkable in its own right. That moment we figure out what's going on... wow.

I like the kind of matter-of-factly way the main characters relate to the supernatural world and being a medium. Kristen Stewart was excellent in it; I hadn't seen her in much before this and I hadn't been impressed with her performance in Café Society, but she hits it out the field in this one. I heard the movie was booed at Cannes, which I find baffling.

I heard the movie was booed at Cannes, which I find baffling. She was good in the part. I found her character's flat demeanour unsympathetic, but I'm sure that's exactly what Assayas was asking of her and she delivered. Saw Guardians II a couple nights ago. Entertaining, though not quite as likeable as the first one, partly perhaps because expectations were a bit higher this time around. Some of the jokes were too predictable, others just didn't work for me, Rocket Raccoon was more annoying than previously, and Mantis, I'm sorry to say, was even worse than the preview had led me to fear. So awful it makes me wonder what they were thinking. However, that's most of the negative stuff in a nutshell. It was still a fun movie for the most part.
