A movie loosely based on the 1986 arcade classic Rampage is in the works starring The Rock. I've only seen one movie The Rock was in that I didn't like. So despite that this is WB trying to sell a movie with the title of a game that it seems to share very little in common, I'll at least still check it out of Redbox. With the sheer amount of quarters I spent playing this game, renting the movie is a must. :-)

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)  Decent action thriller on par with the first one arguably at times even a little better. Still think the live action version pales in comparison to the books though. I saw this movie and I felt it was too violent and not enough substance to hold my interest. I'm a Tom Cruise fan (not die hard) but this movie kind of failed to hold my interest in a way and sometimes it's has elements that I've had problems dealing with. |

Rupture (2016 )  Banal and uninteresting torture porn despite the casting of Michael Chiklis, Kerry Bishe and Peter Stormare. The twist is that these torture experiements are being carried out in order to evolve people to the point where it changes them on a genetic level. Honestly I was expecting more from the director of Secretary (2002).

Two films that were pretty much a waste of time just landed on Netflix Canada: Cowboys and aliens and A cure for wellness.
Both had good things going for them, including good performances and an intriguing beginning. In fact, both were pretty good for a while until they generated into bland generic stuff. (How something bland can be at the same time so loud and graphic is a strange alchemy, but there we are).
In the first case, the juxtaposition of space aliens and the wild west offered so many possibilities; mixing genres can result in such magnificently gut-wrenching oddities as The Bone Tomahawk, after all. But the opportunity seems wasted in Cowboys and aliens. Big, stupid monsters looking like the illegitimate offspring of the Hulk and the aliens from Independence day come to Earth to steal our gold. For some reason, they also abduct people and cut them to pieces in their laboratories even if they clearly act like they don’t have enough of an IQ to carry any kind of zoological research; mutilating cattle and ranchers is just something that they do, apparently. Fighting ensues. That’s it? What a waste of a good concept.
A cure for wellness starts very well, in that ”you’re now stuck in an isolated place where things are not what they seem and you also might be crazy” kind of way, reminding the viewer of Shutter Island. It’s actually pretty intriguing until the third act, when it suddenly turns into a cheap action movie complete with useless and repugnantly graphic scenes. What a disappointment!

The first teaser trailer for Avengers: Infinity War is supposed to drop tomorrow. I've had like a dozen folks I know post it and get all hyped about it, and it's a bit infectious.

This one's a couple of years old but still fits the communities definition of not classic... Wreck-It Ralph (2012)  I watched this for the first time on Disney XD earlier today. I thought it was fun despite some of the humor not being to my taste and the artwork throughout is incredibly well done. I liked seeing the use of characters from various video games; Q*bert, Street Fighter, Sonic the Hedgehog, etc. |

So I finally saw Justice League, and I may be in the minority, but man, I really liked it. No disrespect to Snyder, and I am terribly sorry for what he is going through personally, but just looking purely at the work, OH MY GOD Joss Whedon saved the movie and arguably the DCCU (or at least ran with the ball after Wonder Woman). This movie finally took the DESPERATELY NECESSARY step of lightening the tone of the DCCU and restoring some hope and positivity. I read that Whedon rewrote, reshot, and was forced to cut quite a lot of Snyder's material to meet the studio's demand of a sub-2 hour movie. Obviously I don't know what was cut, but it sounds like it was more dark and OHSOSERIOUS HEAVY end of the world catastrophe stuff.
While I was able to derive some enjoyment of Superman Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman for what they were, the dark tone really didn't quite fit Superman. Look, the guy is symbol of hope and justice. Heroes saving people. They finally hit that there. Yeah, they didn't have intro movies for Aquaman, Flash or Cyborg yet, but frankly they didn't need to. They had just enough background and arc for them to be in the movie, and I am content to wait until their solo movies to get the deeper dive.
I see the movie getting a lot of criticism, but I quite liked it. A movie about a dude flying around in his underwear punching aliens, a guy who dresses up like a bat and fights criminals, and a lady with magical bulletproof bracelets and a rope that makes you tell the truth should maybe not be so super serious all the time.
Also, there were some great homage shots to iconic comics pictures and Alex Ross paintings. The movie looked great.
