Latest new movie I've seen was Loveless, Russian movie about a couple breaking up whose 12-year-old son disappears. One of the most powerful movies I've seen in recent months and, as the title would suggest, pretty bleak. Not to be missed, though. It's a very simple story but I was riveted the whole way through. I missed the director's previous film, Leviathan, which was also highly acclaimed, but I'll definitely be tracking it down now and keeping an eye out for his next one. Andrey Zvyagintsev, his name is.

Reviews of the new Tomb Raider movie saying that it is too much like a video game. That's an insult for a movie based upon a video game? More like a compliment wouldn't you think? Is it so bad that it should look or feel like a video game? I can think of quite a few comic book movies that I wished could be said to have more closely resembled a comic book!

At my LCS that I've visited yesterday ... many members have mixed feelings about it. I totally understand your point that this movie is like a video game ... but it is too obvious for the most part and I'm not a Tomb Raider fan at all ... why? ... I don't play video games at all and about 50 percent of the members are avoiding it because it is more like a true video game and 50 percent of the members loving it because it is a true video game experience and that's why they have mixed feelings about this new Tomb Raider movie.

I don't think many games adapt to other mediums as well as, say, books can to movies. Removing the player agency from the well-written games I can think of would almost always hurt the story. If Hollywood wants to adapt video games, I'd rather see new stories set in the same world, not a straight up retelling of the game's plot.

Pacific Rim Uprising is just a good old fashioned giant monster fights against robots with devastation and destruction on a grand scale. Boyega as son of Pentecost is great and mostly every one else in the movie has little to do but we aren't here for the acting cuz it's all about the gonzo action. A strong sequel that is plenty of fun with furthering the original concepts without making your brain hurt. Went in expecting little more than some giant rock-em-sock-em kung fu robot entertainment and that is exactly what I received.
Sets thing up for a 3rd sequel/finale and could even make for a great cable television series...

Saturday morning watched Rampage with Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson. Entertaining mindless destruction so a rather typical summer movie. Elevated if only with the Rock essentially being himself in the movie. A lot of dumb down science fiction and quite a few "huh" moments as well. Well done CGI and the monsters all look good if nothing like the game characters. Quite a bit of disconnect between the game and movie and yet there were moments where they tried to include some game bits. Outside of George the Ape who is the main star of the movie the other 2 creatures get short shrift for the most part.
It is a summer turn your brain off and enjoy it for what it does: provide massive creative destruction from giant monsters. Very little plot, some laughs, and enough city destroying action. Fairly routine summer type of movie being created these days. No worse or better than any of the old TOHO Godzilla movies.

Deadpool. Need I say more? Laugh out loud moments throughout the movie. They really abuse Deadpool physically within the movie which reflects what many of us may actually wish they would do to him. Won't spoil the movie other than to say that it deserves every bit of the R-rating and delivers it in fine form. This is a totally in your face non-PC movie that knows what it is meant to be. A pure joyful naughty romp on the sadistic side of the comic book world. Not for everyone, but I can still enjoy the movie though I don't care for or read any of the Deadpool comic books. That says something about Ryan Reynolds twisted Wade!

Memorial Day went and saw Solo: A Star Wars Story. It was an enjoyable turn your brain off summer type movie. Totally unnecessary as a Star Wars Movie (I think sales are showing this) which tells the early life of Han Solo before meeting up with Luke and Ben and Leia. Nothing in the movie bothered me as I'm not the obsessive follower of canon versus books. There really isn't anything new or spectacular to be seen as Ron Howard was likely told to make it as Star Warsy as possible. It looks appropriate to the Star Wars universe in style and tone and replicates some of the more fun possibilities in doing so. It doesn't disrespect any of the original Trilogy while providing some fun and chuckles along the way. Cast did fine and it delivered as a summer popcorn movie which is all I wanted from it.

This looks fun and I'm glad they were able to incorporate more Disney properties.
