Published: October, 2004 Synopsis: This issue finds Usagi's surly friend, Gen the bounty hunter, tracking down yet another reward. This bounty has attracted the attention of Gen's archrival, Stray Dog, and is on the head of none other than the murderous Inazuma! The two samurai adversaries are in hot pursuit, neither realizing that the swordswoman has been possessed by the Black Soul.

This was an interesting enough tale with Stray Dog and Gen but it feels more like set up for a larger story than a complete issue. Perhaps a team up with the Demon Queller?

Last page is hilarious. I miss those two together. I never got into the Gen and Stray Dog pairing. I get why Stan pushed it -- Gen was too restrictive on Usagi to remain a permanent travelling companion, but the character is beloved and just doesn't work without a straightman. Still, it didn't work for me. Gen just isn't Gen when he isn't playing off of Usagi. I think he knows that too, which is why he seeks him out.

I definitely prefer him paired with Usagi but as you stated if he's with Usagi too much it can limit the kinds of stories being told...and I like hat sense of variety but at the same time I like Gen so I don't like him being gone for too long but left to his own devices I feel like his character might be too broody and serious so he definitely needs someone to be paired with so I'll take Stray Dog

We get to see that the spirit and soul of Inazuma is a true warrior constantly fighting against the evil that is Jei, only to being forced to continue under Jei's subjugation. Gen discovers that perhaps it is not worth all the money that is being spent to hunt a new bounty(Inazuma/Jei) and that no reward is worthwhile if you aren't alive to spend it. We are allowed the enjoyment of seeing Gen's interactions with someone other than Usagi and we find that Gen is actually smarter than he looks in his escapades with Stray Dog, the Bounty Hunter as it is Gen that is spending less on trailing (he doles out Silver a piece at a time where as Stray Dog doles out Gold) the bounty. Gen comes across much more dry and less humorous without his friend Usagi to banter with and we are shown that Gen is NOT quite the gruff fool he seems to portray.
