BLACK LIGHT The World of LB Cole Biography by Bill Schelly. L.B. Cole created some of the most bizarre, proto-psychedelic, eye-popping comic book covers of all time, yet remarkably this is the first retrospective of his career, featuring the largest collection of Cole covers ever assembled, in an oversize format that showcases his attention to detail and his versatility in all the popular comic book genres of the day. Cole burst into comics during the glory years of the Golden Age of comics, circa 1943. He is famed and highly collected for his bold covers, usually featuring “poster colors” — brilliant primaries often over black backgrounds — and an over-the-top sense of the bizarre mixed with whimsy. His part in titles like Catman, Suspense, Terrific, Blue Bolt Weird Tales, and Terrors of the Jungle make these highly desirable. Only Timely cover artist Alex Schomberg is on the same scale. From horror to good girl art, romance to science fiction, there was no genre Cole did not master. He co-owned Star Publishers and nearly every book they published boasted one of his covers. He also started Croydon to publish sexy digests and paperbacks, many with cover gems by Cole. In 1956 Cole switched gears and became Art Director for Classics Ilustrated. He created some of the best new painted covers, and also recruited a bevy of ex-EC artists to bring their talent to the adaptations. Next, he went into “slick” magazines! He was a success wherever he landed. Cole encountered fandom in 1976 and this led to an Overstreet Priceguide cover and numerous cover recreations. Here is the most complete collection of these ever assembled. Bill Schelly provides a 150,000 word biography, with newly uncovered details and more information that we’ve ever seen before. There’s never been a comic book cover designer like L.B. Cole and there’s never been a book like this one. That Oni Press sale is good on everything they publish, not just the 17 featured series. Almost all of it is tempting me.

FLESH & STEEL The Art of Russ Heath Curated by Frédéric Manzano and Florentino Flóres. This is from the same people and follows in the footsteps of the critically acclaimed Wallace Wood: Woodworks and Big John Buscema, massive art books based on major exhibits in Spain. This is THE collection of Heath’s extraordinary body of work, from his earliest days as an artist to the present, almost entirely from the ORIGINAL ARTWORK. This offers you a cornucopia of rare and never-before-seen art, some of it from Heath's personal archives. His early days at Atlas (Marvel) doing pre-code horror covers, like Journey Into Mystery, Kid Colt and Lorna the Jungle Girl. His rare work at EC. His massive legacy at DC, from The Golden Gladiator in the first issues of The Brave and the Bold, on to The Sea Devils, Robin Hood, The Haunted Tank and, of course, Sgt. Rock and Easy Company. Several DC war stories are here in full. Then into DC 1970s mystery books, Warren’s Creepy and Eerie (several horror stories from Warren are reproduced here in full), National Lampoon, some titillating work from his Little Annie Fannie period in Playboy and more recent work for Marvel, for specialty graphic novels, a sexy Bettie Page piece…and much more. Everything here is thoroughly annotated, including commentary from Heath himself, and intricately researched, with a complete checklist of his entire career. A masterful book focusing on a masterful artist! Includes pictures from the exhibit’s opening night in Palma, 2013. Curator Frédéric Manzano (owner of the Comic Art Gallery) has been deeply involved with all three of these major books, Woodwork, Buscema, and now this. Text is in both English and Spanish. Oversized 9x12 hardcover, 340 pages in full color. Publisher: IDW, 2014 Binding: Hardcover without dustjacket Dimensions: 9x12 Pages: 320pg Color: Full Color throughout ISBN: #9781613779712 Published at $49.99 On Sale! Save $10! Your price: $39.99

INCREDIBLE HERB TRIMPE By Dewey Cassell and Aaron Sultan. From running the first photostat machine at Marvel Comics to being the first to illustrate Wolverine, no other member of the Marvel Bullpen had such a varied and remarkable career as Herb Trimpe. He drew licensed characters based on toys such as G.I. Joe, Godzilla, and Transformers, which went on to become blockbuster movies. He drew runs of super-heroes like Iron Man, Defenders, Captain Britain, and even Marvel’s flagship character Spider-Man, but he’s best known for his definitive eight-year stint drawing the Incredible Hulk. This book, produced with Herb's full cooperation just prior to his recent passing, chronicles the life and art of Trimpe through his own voice, as well as the voices of friends and colleagues like Stan Lee, Tom DeFalco, Roy Thomas, John Romita, Bill Peckmann, Sal Buscema, Joe Sinnott, Larry Hama, Doug Moench, Eliot Brown, Len Wein, Ron Frenz, Steve Englehart, and his son Alex Trimpe. Their testimony to his talent and his legacy of artwork leave no wonder why he has been dubbed “The Incredible Herb Trimpe.” Publisher: Twomorrows, 2015 Binding: Hardcover without dustjacket Dimensions: 9x11 Pages: 160pg Color: PC ISBN: #9781605490625 Published at $34.95 On Sale! SECRET HISTORY OF MARVEL COMICS By Blake Bell and Dr. Michael J. Vassallo This fascinating and highly, highly detailed book digs back to the 1930s before Marvel began. Owner Martin Goodman had tentacles into a publishing world that might have gotten him lynched. It did land him in court on three separate occasions. He mostly published lurid and sensationalistic pulps, filled with naked ladies, horror and violence. His magazines featured sexually-charged detective and romance fiction, and celebrity gossip. And artists like Jack Kirby, who was producing Captain America for eight-year-olds, were simultaneously dipping their toes in both ponds. Here is the parallel story of 1930s/40s Marvel Comics sharing offices with those Goodman publications not quite fit for children. His comics playbook: never an innovator, always chasing the trends and saturating the market. Nearly half the book features a comprehensive display of the artwork produced for Goodman’s other enterprises by Marvel Comics artists such as Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, Alex Schomburg, Bill Everett, Al Jaffee, and Dan DeCarlo, plus the very best pulp artists in the field, including Norman Saunders, J.W. Scott, L.F. Bjorklund, and Frank R. Paul. Much of this has seldom been seen before. These rare pieces of comic art, pulp and magazine history will open the door to Marvel Comics’ unseen history. The authors should be familiar to any comics fan. Bell has done fine biographies of Steve Ditko and Bill Everett; Vassallo provides the highly informative introductions to the Marvel Masterworks Atlas Era series and is a regular contributor to Alter Ego. Together they've really uncovered a goldmine of new information, including how in spite of Goodman's avarice, Marvel still produced some of the finest work in comics, as well some of the wildest and hair-raising pulps and magazines ever to grace the newsstands. It's a real page-turner and I strongly recommend it. -- Bud Publisher: Fantagraphics, 2013 Binding: Hardcover without dustjacket Dimensions: 7x10 Pages: 300pg Color: PC ISBN: #9781606995525 Published at $39.99 On Sale!
