Beats me. Like Star Trek and Star Wars, I don't remember a time when comics weren't a part of my life. Ditto. Although I think Byrne is the first artist whose style I could recognize on sight. The first trade of Dark Phoenix Saga certainly helped in that regard and his FF run was one of the first titles that I wanted to follow monthly.

Byrne was an artist that I remember really enjoying as a kid... His Superman issues, his runs on West Coast Avengers and She Hulk, Classic X-Men reprints of the Dark Phoenix saga...
But like String and dupersuper, comics were just always around when I was growing up - my older brother read them, my dad was a fan of Superman from when he was a kid so there were comics at home and at my grandparents house. What really probably got me into comics was things like Casper and Richie Rich - I loved the Harvey Comics digests, and Archie digests, Gladstone Disney reprints, some of the Star Comics... but even then, I was reading 'grown up' comics alongside the comics for younger readers so it's all a bit of a jumble.

It would have to be one of the guys working at Archie in the late 80's; Dan DeCarlo, Dan Parent, Rex Lindsey...? Once I switched to big boy comics, I'd have to say Dan Jurgens (what is it with the Dan's? ) is the first creator I took note of and actively looked for books bearing his name.
