My local comic shop puts all the covers out equally. One time I gave back a Blank Savage Dragon #200 because I wanted art on the cover I was paying for. Yeah I know there was a blank variant to Future Quest #1. Not sure who the hell would want to buy that over the Lopresti, Sienkiewicz or Shaner covers.

Blank covers make even less sense to me. They just look like the generic foodstuffs from Repo Man Didn't Marvel also make fun of that at one point in the 80's with one particular comic cover?

I buy a lot of blank covers and then when I go to cons I get commisions from artists on those blank covers so I have one of a kind covers no one else does... no one else in the world has the Sabrina the Teen Age Witch as the Scarlet Witch cover by Dan Parent to Uncanny Avengers #1... started life as a black variant, but became something totally unique. Same with this cover to Thanos Rising #1 which started life as a blank cover... but is now a totally unique piece. Now if you don't go to cons or are unwilling to pay to commission pieces of art form artists, then blank covers make little sense for you to buy, but they have a function for some people. I like having unique one-of-a-kind pieces rather than the same thing everyone else has when I can. But then I'd rather spend the money on a piece of original art rather than a copy of a comic that is part of a print run, even if it is a high grade key, because it's still a mass produced commercial product rather than a unique piece of comic art. -M

If you're using blank covers solely to bring to artists to do whatever you want to them, that I can understand and I might even start doing that once I find a stable job

That's pretty much the intended function of the blank cover.
For about a year, DC was also donating a portion of the cover price on the blank variants to their We Can Be Heroes charity, so I do have a bunch of the DC blank covers amassed to use at cons.
I usually only get the blanks when they are the same cover price as the regular cover, not when they are more expensive buy in covers.

Yeah, I knew the purpose of the blank cover but I already had autographs from Erik Larsen and I didn't really see myself trudging to another con with a blank cover to get a commission from him.

Well Hastings failed to find a buyer before it's deadline and it was announced today they had been auctioned off to two financial companies who will sell off all the companies assets (i.e. stock, fixtures, etc.) and close all 126 stores in the US sometime this autumn. They only need to give employees a 7 day notice, so it could happen at any point really.
