For the balance beam question, Ish's three weighings is as far as I know the standard answer and the one the job interviewers were looking for. However, I have to admit that I have been unable to find a flaw in Yip Yip's answer and description - can anyone else see one? The way I understand Yip Yip, if your not lucky, it's 3 weighs (if the heavier ball is one of the 2 you put aside in the beginning) Hmm, it'd still be two weighs either way. Because if the two sets of three balance then you know the one of the two you set aside is the heavy one. So weighing number one is of the three vs three on the scale and then weighing number two is the two you set aside. Two weighs.

The version on Dara O'Briain's show was with 9 balls, and the mathematician said there that 2 weighs would be enough, so for 8 balls, the same would go. Yip Yip's answer was the answer there as well. (Weight 3 against 3, then from the heavier set, weigh 1 against 1).

Who Is This Iconic Movie Actress As A Child? I've seen this before, so I won't respond. I will say I don't think this kid pic especially resembles her when she's grown up.

Good question. I'm not meaning an offense to anyone, but how are we supposed to know that? I've never been good math, but I'm super confused. Maybe it's just baseball knowledge? It's a mathematical problem that I just worked out. I could have used many different numbers of at bats for any of them. But the key thing was to make sure Popeye's 2nd half at bats was much much higher than Bluto's first half at bats since between those two, Popeye had the higher batting average. Therefore I'm making the impact of Popeye's higher average huge when you total them all up It goes back to what I said was the moral of the story Here's the "official" answer as broadcast on Car Talk at some point:
RAY: Let's assume that they both had 600 at-bats. If Bluto batted .300 for the first half of the season and he had 500 at-bats during that first half of the season, he got 150 hits. One hundred fifty over 500 is .300 average, right? Now, If Popeye batted .250 and had 100 at-bats, he would have had 25 for 100. OK? You with me so far? TOM: I'm with you. RAY: The second half of the season, Bluto bats .400. How does he do that? Well, we know he had 500 at-bats in the first half, so he's only been up 100 times in the second half of the season, and he got 40 hits. Popeye bats .375, but he's up 500 times. He gets 187 and a half hits. So now, let's figure it all out. Bluto batted 600 times and got 190 hits. Popeye got 212 and a half. And when you figure that out, Bluto batted .316 for the season. Popeye bats .353 and wins the batting title. TOM: No kidding! RAY: Pretty good, huh?
And here's this week's Puzzler:
RAY: Stevie decides to take his motorcycle to work to enjoy the nice warm, sunny weather. On his way there he looks up and sees one of those big signs that display the time and temperature. The temperature comes up in Fahrenheit, and a few seconds later it comes up in centigrade. Stevie says, "Hah! That's interesting. The digits are exactly reversed." For example, it might have read 31 degrees Fahrenheit, and when it showed the centigrade reading it said "13." At the end of the day, when he comes out of work, he realizes he should have checked the weather forecast. It’s drizzly, rainy and cold, and he has to get back on his motorcycle. He's riding home when he comes to the same intersection. He thinks, "What are the chances I'd ever see that again?" He knows it's a different temperature because it's not warm and sunny anymore. He sees the temperature in Fahrenheit, and the temperature in centigrade. TOM: Let me guess! They're the same digits reversed, again. RAY: What are the chances? Only in a puzzler could this happen! The question is, what was the temperature in the morning when he went to work, and what was the temperature when he went home?
Note - "centigrade" is now more commonly called "Celsius".
