I do recall that Beast Boy (also a member of the Doom Patrol too) and having said that I did remember that letter that you posted Shax very vividly and I thought it would be best for both Speedy and the Beast Boy to be members of the Teen Titans and later on they did made him member (i.e. the Changeling) but I felt that he deserved it too at this moment of time. Speaking of Beast Boy it would give him more exposure and that's would also be a big asset to the Doom Patrol as well. I was very disappointed in that Shax, it's one of the reasons why I did not care for the early days of the Teen Titans and I have mixed feelings about the how the group should expand at that time. DC Comics Editorial Board back in those days missed a golden opportunity and I just don't why they did not let him in.

I'm curious what you liked so much about Beast Boy back then. He's an angry brat in both this story and the few Doom Patrol issues I've read from this era. It's true that his life is a tragic one, but he's a little too Post-Crisis Jason Todd for my taste. It often seems like the character Wolfman was writing beginning in 1980 was someone else entirely.

To me, he's the Nightcrawler (somewhat) of the DC Comics and having said that I like him because he has a lot to offer and has to overcome obstacles to be a hero of his own rights. I remember many Doom Patrol members had to console him and having said that causes friction and when you have friction on your team you need to get rid of him in the first place. It's made me ill and that's why they needed to work that out and they (DC Editors) did not want to deal with it. When they had him there - I thought it would give that character a boost and hopefully they will turn him around. I know he's angry and a brat like you said here. But, I did read a lot of Doom Patrol - I read about dozen or more (maybe like 20-30 early days) and I thought it would be nice if the DC Comics made him less angry and more acceptable member of the Doom Patrol and hopefully become a member of the Titans as well and that's would give him a much needed boost. I rather have diversity on the team the problem is that he did not have a Parent figure ... and that's why they left him out. This is best I can do for the moment. Batman - Robin Wonder Woman - Wonder Girl Flash - Kid Flash Aquaman - Aqualad Green Arrow - Speedy ?? - Beast Boy

In an age in which characters tended to remain static across issues at DC, Beast Boy was a character that you wanted to see heal. That really would have been intriguing.

Although I don't know it for a fact, I suspect TT editor George Kashdan wanted to add Beast Boy because, as a character from officemate Murray Boltinoff's stable of titles, he and Haney would have more freedom to use and develop him than they did the Julius Schwartz-controlled Robin and Kid Flash or Robert Kanigher's Wonder Girl (or would have had using Mort Weisinger's Supergirl). I would not be surprised if the intent was to ease Aqualad, from the Kashdan-edited Aquaman title, out of the book to avoid the plot restrictions shax is so aptly skewering in this thread. Eventually Speedy was brought in to fill that role, a better solution as there was no GA strip at the time and thus no writer or editor to coordinate character development with.

You know, I didn't even notice until now, but there was a six month lag between issues #5 and 6, AND Cardy wasn't around for issue #6. I wonder what the story is.

Maybe Kashdan just plain didn't like Speedy, using him just enough to satisfy reader requests (which, as a lifelong Speedy hater, I totally get). It wouldn't be until Boltinoff took over as TT editor that Roy became a regular. Cei-U! I summon the Boy Bowman!

And yet he did an excellent job of selling us on Speedy in issue #5. That's what confuses me. I was personally thinking he didn't want two non-powered team members, but then I read issue #5 and was thoroughly convinced by Haney that it could work. Don't forget that Speedy was on the team for the Haney-scripted animated TV episodes in September of 1967. I'll be discussing those when we get there.

One theory I've heard is that the reason Speedy wasn't in those early issues is that there was no Green Arrow comic for kids to go to from Teen Titans. My reasoning for keeping him out of Teen Titans is that I flat out don't like him!
I have no information on the big gap in Teen Titans issues and Cardy not being in issue #6.

One theory I've heard is that the reason Speedy wasn't in those early issues is that there was no Green Arrow comic for kids to go to from Teen Titans. Right...the TT editorial/creative team had no $$$ reason to include/regularly feature a character who'd not been seen for a couple of years (Speedy). The inclusion of Speedy--a character without his own separate feature or comic--wouldn't translate into extra sales, i.e., TT readers buying the additional comic(s) Speedy appeared in. And yes, I know Wonder Girl didn't appear elsewhere at the time but she was included in the TT because she was the only teenaged heroine available (since Supergirl was deemed too old aka college-aged) to fill the obligatory token female spot.
