In this case, they must have used one of the panels from the original story

In this case, they must have used one of the panels from the original story I no longer have that Subby Special but the GCD says all the interior stories were drawn by Gene Colan.

Now that's about as pointless a change as you can get: nothing wrong with Sal Buscema's new cover but it's so similar to the original why bother? Especially since interior artist Colan did the original cover

When I look at the Sal Buscema cover , It looks more modern to me than the Colan cover. I suspect that most of those reprint mags were trying to appeal to a newer audience.

In the original cover, Iron Man is pretty much at the mercy of The Crusher. In the Buscema cover there is some tension; can IM reach the Kirby gun in time? Tho I'm not sure why IM needs a gun. I thought he could shoot some kind of rays out of his gloves.

I thought he could shoot some kind of rays out of his gloves. The gun fired a "centrifugal force ray" which increased the Crusher's weight, causing him to fall towards the centre of the Earth, which was the only way Iron Man could defeat him. Yes, really.

And while we're at it, let's see what Marvel put on the cover when they reprinted this issue's Captain America tale in Marvel Double Feature #15: I'm think that the smoke/foam/energy/whatever directly above the bottom blurb actually serves to emphasize the "crotch-shottiness" of this cover, but I can't help but think it was intended to do the opposite. Not one of Gil Kane's most elegant covers, for sure.
