My barber gave me some 1985 issues of Starburst recently. I was reading some, and this caught my eye: I do like Star Trek: TMP, but that plot does sound interesting.

Man, Strange New Worlds was everything I hoped for. Seriously, this was the best Star Trek has been in a long time. I've actually enjoyed Discovery and Picard, but this is classic Trek at its best. Totally agree. This could be my favorite Star Trek series if they can maintain this quality for several seasons.

Wow. Loved the season one finale. Well done. The only episode I wasn't crazy about was the 8th one where M'Benga and his daughter story "came to life".

The ending of that one was a little rushed and unearned, but I loved seeing the actors play against type. The only episode I didn't care for was the homage to Alien last week., killing off {Spoiler: Click to show}Hemmer just to inspire Uhura seemed like such a waste to me. It's like if Disney decided to kill off the Baby Yoda.

Has a ST novel, comic, or one of the new TV shows ever explained how Romulus' sun went supernova?
Obviously it can't be due to the natural evolution of the star, as Romulans would not have settled in a star system ready to blow up. And those things take time, at least in terms of humanoid lifetimes. We can already say that Betelgeuse should go in the next 100,000 years or so. Was foul play involved on Romulus?
I remember that back in the day one of the novels (I forget which one) mentioned something called a starbreaker bomb -which sounded pretty awesome. I think it had destroyed the Orions' star system or something, although my memory is pretty vague. Could one have been used to cripple the Romulan empire? Or was the matter simply unexplained, which isn't necessarily a bad thing considering all that we don't know about outer space?

(...)
Bad writing? Sorry, couldn't resist. I'm really not a fan of the whole idea of the Romulan sun blowing up or, quite frankly, the NuTrek reboot movies in general.
As for the idea of weaponizing stars in ST, in Diane Duane's Rihannsu novels, the Romulans developed technology to create highly destructive ion storms that involved messing around in some way with the nuclear reactions in a star - in fact, the device used to trigger it is called the 'nova bomb.'

While I enjoyed the enthusiasm of the Kelvin reboot, I really didn't like the Romulan or Vulcan disasters. Too bad the "regular" timeline is now stuck with the Romulan debacle. Paramount should have made Duane their senior script reviewer for anything having to do with the Romulans. She made them into a rich and interesting people with a history worthy of it own series. That nova bomb thing sounds like exactly the kind of explanation I hoped would exist. Thanks!

In fact, I think I mentioned something similar in my reviews to Duane's Rihannsu books - i.e., she and also Dorothy Fontana should have always had the final word on any story that involved the Romulans and also Vulcans.

I think there was a series of missions in Star Trek Online where it was implied that it was caused by the Tal Shiar playing around with some kind of doomsday weapon.

I'm not going to lie, I nearly teared up when I saw it. It's a great tribute not only to Nichelle but all of our other absent friends from the Enterprise as well. Great memories all around.

I see The Orville will be on Disney + has anyone seen it and is it similar to STTNG? Or is it filled with juvenile humor?

Not seeing it. It comes closer to looking like a Cardassian battle cruiser...
