If we're ranking films,
1. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Slow moving but sort of epic in magnitude, scary, transformational for the key cast members, and intelligently written (even if it was a partial rip-off of a TOS episode). This is the only Trek film that I felt really tried to take the franchise to a new level on the silver screen. Robert Wise brought a sort of majesty to it and managed to create tension even when the film went over an hour without a single photon torpedo firing.
2. Star Trek: Into Darkness
It had its logic gaps, but it was well written, the acting was incredible, and the homages to Wrath of Khan made me like that film more than I do when I actually sit down to watch it.
3. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Intense, character rich, intelligent, heavy, and Sulu got to be a Captain.
4. Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan
Great sets and effects, good action, great enemy, decent story.
5. Star Trek (JJ Abrahms)
I neither like nor dislike this one.
6. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
I honestly barely remember this one, but I have no negative memories of the film.
7. Star Trek: Insurrection
Of all the Next Gen films, I felt this one had the most coherent plot and best enemy, but there were still LOTS of problems with it.
8. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
I hate the parodying of Trek in a Trek film, but this film definitely had its moments anyway.
That's it. I'd rather pretend Star Trek V, Generations, First Contact, and Nemesis were never made.

I still haven't seen several of the movies and it's been so long since I've watched the ones I have seen that I think I'd have to go through the whole series before I could say much about them. I enjoyed most of them at the time, but none of them stood up to the tv show, for me.
Also, I'm waiting for STV fans to start a "These are the enterprises of the starship Voyager" thread.

Also, I'm waiting for STV fans to start a "These are the enterprises of the starship Voyager" thread. I will always be puzzled by people who enjoy garlic, the smell of fried fish, cigarettes and Star Trek Voyager. But, as they say, to each their own.

I got started on Trek around the time Star trek IV came out Every saturday at 11:30 PM EST Channel 44 a PBS station based in Scranton PA would present 3 Commercial Free Star Trek original series episodes in production order every week. by the time Star Trek IV was in theaters I was a full-time Trekkie. by the time Next generation came out I was a card carrying member of the official fan club and a convention goer as well as a reader of the DC Comics Run. I have the Original series the Animated series next generation and all of the feature films ripped into my computer and every time a new film comes out I sync them all into iTunes and onto my devices and have a year of Trek. My favorite comic runs of Star trek were the two DC runs an I'm a huge fan of both the Playmates figures as well as the original Art asylum/DST collections (not such a big fan of the newer pre-posed figures)

It's really easy to glue new heads onto uniformed bodies and suddenly quadruple your crew

I disagree!! Very much so, in fact. I LOVED Tripp and Malcolm. Tripp, I DID mention in the same post you're quoting that I really liked Tripp Bite your damned tongue, sir! Geordi was the nice, shy, every-dork, as well as a fun straightman to Data. Wesley was a poor attempt at a Gary Stu that utterly failed to understand the age and maturity of the viewing demographic, but in the later seasons, the writers figured out that Geordi was a far more accurate embodiment of everyone who was watching the show, and they nailed the Gary Stu approach far more effectively with him. Malcolm was a total a**hole, and multiple episodes spent a lot of time exploring this. I honestly have no idea what was likable about that character beyond his accent. Malcolm seemed like a regular guy to me... his history was British Navy, and he went to space instead in defiance of his family, but still has a bit of pirate in him, made me think he was like the decendant of Jack Aubrey or something. Plus, I always love a guy that wants to blow things up. Then there's the escapades where he and Tripp try to pick up alien women, which is EPIC. I just always thought Geordi was boring.. though I agree he was good as Data's straight man. I don't think he was shy, or a dork, just a boring, competent professional. Barkley and O'Brien were both far more interesting. I actually liked Wesley towards the end, when he came back after getting kicked out of Starfleet academy... those were some good episodes.

They're trying to talk to the whales. 8th place.... BAH! Whenever I see anything about talking to whales, I have to think of an old Alas Smith and Jones sketch: (just the sound, not the graphics).
