I talked with Mike Richardson at SDCC in 1998 and expressed my disappointment that those didn't do better. He said they'd be back, and of course they have come back here and there, though Project Black Sky was probably the least successful event I've ever seen, or not seen. As far as Defiant, Shooter was just getting ready with the Schism line-wide crossover, when Defiant was sued by Marvel for having their first title a "rip-off" of a comic Marvel UK published and reprinted by Marvel with nothing other than the root word "plasm" being in common. Shooter fought back, and won, in court, but the legal fees broke the company.

I bought every issue of Capt Midnight & Brain Boy by Dark Horse. My Dad remembers the Capt Midnight radio show, TV show & the Fawcett comics series. I had heard of Dell's Brain Boy before...
There have been so many great superhero books in every decade published that were not done by DC or Marvel...

I have bought most of the indie superhero comics and have really enjoyed most.

Fascinating as all this is, let's be sure not to hijack Batflunkie's thread specifically about Ultraverse
