Thanks for the feedback folks! I think I will be going with the #97, just because it is a unique moment in comics history in which Stan had a part and also is already a special comic to me. I will see if my friend will tape the signing too

An unauthenticated signature can de-value a book if you attempt to sell it in the future. Keeping that in mind, you might as well use the book you already have a signature A moot point perhaps, but this really only applies to high-grade books where the signature appears on the cover. In that instance, the signature would be considered a defect and would either lower the overall grade or necessitate a "Qualified" label. In the case of mid- to low-grade books, the signature would be considered an acceptable defect within that range and the book could be certified with the "Universal" label with no effect on the overall grade.

An unauthenticated signature can de-value a book if you attempt to sell it in the future. I probably have a hundred books that I got signed years before anyone thought of the idea of authenticating signatures, and assume that there are thousands more like that out there. But even at the time (80s-90s), I didn't think of signatures adding to value, and there were some people who thought it devalued books even if it was authentic. So, not a real incentive for forging autographs. (I got Stan to autograph the 60s FF and Spider-man paperbacks, stopping him in the aisle of a show.)

Getting a signature should be done because we hold a creator in great respect. What should we care if some opportunist decided that a signature is no good unless they have authenticated it? The merchandization of signatures has led us to today's situation where creators rightfully demand compensation for signing anything. It's no longer a private act between creator and fan, it's another effin' business transaction.

I got Steranko to sign a few things for me. He insisted on signing them to personally, as he was frustrated with "fans" flipping them on eBay. I told him these pieces are for me with your autograph. Course he got a kick out of Hondo. Those too will be matted and framed someday.

I've never gotten anything comic related signed. I'd love to meet people like Jim Steranko, John Romita Sr., Kurt Busiek, Walt Simonson and Stan Lee, but these people don't seem to come to the UK very often. Even if or when they do, I'm damned if I'm gonna wait in line for hours to meet them and then pay to have them sign my stuff. I just wanna shake these people's hands, exchange a few words and get them to sign something -- which is how I've gotten musicians to sign stuff for me on occasion.

^ I am almost happier that my work friend is doing the line standing for me. He is also gifting it to me as a wedding gift which is equally as awesome.

I stood in line for 8 hours to meet Stan. That was before my second back surgery. I couldn't do it again.

Course he got a kick out of Hondo. Those too will be matted and framed someday. In these circumstances, this is what matters most to me. If I'm going through the time, effort (and in some cases money) to have a creator autograph a certain item then I never intend on selling that item because it is personal to me. Thus having some form of legal authentication for the signature is moot in that regard as long as I personally know that the creator signed it. Either way, pfs17, sounds like you'd make the right choice regardless. That is one awesome wedding gift. Congrats on both!

Delayed response on this, my apologies. We got married on August 13th in good ole Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario! Was a fantastic day!
And for those who care, the book is signed. I went with the Amazing Spider-Man #97 which is also signed by Gil Kane on the inside. I would love to know when Kane signed it as the person I bought it off years ago online was completely unaware of the signature inside. My friend also paid to have a certificate of authenticity which was very nice of him. I hooked him up with a Dr. Strange #181 which contained his two favourite Marvel characters (Doc Strange and Juggernaut) and his wife with a Secret Invasion issue that had her favourite character, Medusa, holding Black Bolt's costume.
Pictures to follow!

My signed Stan Lee ish...and some figures for the heck of it. Anyone know how to reach John Romita, would love to have him complete the signing trifecta.
