Surviving Megalopolis #6 Simone/Calafiore I really wanted this series to be good... it's got a really fun set up... Simone seems to have her own Superhero universe here (ala Astro City), that's been turned upside down by..something. The last issue promised a big showdown, with the good guys going to the old Supervillains to be the heroes and stop Southern Belle (Simone's Wonder Woman analogue), but it turns out to be a bait and switch.. the villains are dispatched in like 3 pages (literally ripped apart), and what really happens is Overlord (the Superman analogue) turns back up for a random fight that doesn't make a huge amount of sense. Completely forgotten are the overreaching plot of WHY the good guys went crazy, and what's at the bottom of the big hole in Megalopolis, and even the non-powered characters are mostly forgotten, other than as fodder, until the end. The ending puts us pretty much at the same place as the beginning, but I'm not sure I'll be around if there's another series.. this one just squanders too much potential. Still pretty art, though: Plot 1/5 Art 4/5 Overall 5/10

Elquest: Final Quest 16 Richard and Wendy Pini At this point, I feel like the series is just fan service. The plot has barely moved forward an inch in 16 issues.. here we have Rayek fighting his inner demons (again) more discussion about who should go to the palace and who should say, and more about the human fleet that has been in transit for like 10 issues now. The glossy paper shows off Wendy Pini's art very well, so it's a joy to look at, but it's like they either don't want to (or don't know how) to end the story. Story: 2/5 Art: 4/5 Overall: 6/10

Astro City #39 Busiek/Carnero Only Kurt Busiek can write a story about a tax accountant and make it a fantastic comic book. I think this is going to be a multi-parter about the origin of the Hanged Man, but that's still in the background at this point. What we do get is Marta, the owner of a small accounting firm in Shadow Hill, who goes about her day and ends up being asked for help by the Hanged Man. Plot: 5/5 Art: 4/5 Overall: 9/10

Story: 2/5 Art: 4/5 Overall: 6/10 I have seen the Pini's at the last two Phoenix Comic-con's here in 2013 and 2014 and during their panels they kind of addressed this in that for quite a few years they had stepped away from the actual comic trying/fighting to get the series into animation while having other artists and writers continuing the "Quest" through the various other secondary characters. They received much mail asking for the "return" of Wendy and the original Wolf Rider story so they searched for a publisher to support them finishing up this story. When Darkhorse finally stepped in with the promise of allowing them to complete the story and to republish ALL the series prior the Pini's set up a timeline with Darkhorse for reprinting everything while having an ongoing. So yes, this final story line has probably been calculated and plotted and planned and stretched out so as to coincide with reprinting and maintaining this"new" ongoing. Knowing this i really have no problem as the art and story by Wendi and Richard through all of Elfquest has been exceptional and that now printing has become able to capture her art and colors so spectacularly i will gladly support their end story. What they have managed to create and produce on their own is so much better than all of the other monotonous comics in the mainstream i can afford to spend a few extra dollars investing in and supporting their wondrously magical and human world.

Scooby-Doo Team-Up #18 If you like super-pets, you'll love this issue. Premise/Synopsis: Scooby and the gang team up with various characters under the DC/HB umbrella. This issue Scooby teams up with Ace the Bat Hound, Wonder Dog, Krypto and G'nort and fly to a planet in the Sirius system (yes the dog star for those who missed the joke) that is inhabited by intelligent talking dogs with their own super-hero culture and are asked to solve the case of the haunted headquarters of one of those super-hero teams. You can't miss the team of feline super-villains either, especially Psi-Amese-this issue is worth it just for that pun alone). Story: 4/5 Art: 4/5 so 8/10 but add in the Fun Factor and it's an 11. -M PS Prince Hal should watch out with the canine cruelty covers or this crew might come sniff him out and fetch justice.

Batgirl #3 -
Plot: Barbara gets her butt kicked by an MMA fighter, but gets a lead on her mystery, thanks to her scummy potential love interest... of course, it's a trap... to be continued! This travelling thing with Batgirl just isn't working for me, not when the end of the NEw 52 series set up things in such an interesting way... I hope when she gets back it's not all gone.
Plot: 2/5 Art 3/5 OVerall: 5/10
(Wally West and the) Titans #3
Plot: Kadabra really hates Wally, and caused all the trouble... only he wiped his own memory, too. Not sure how that jives with how he's acting, though. After some character bits (mostly with Wally) and Kadabra doing an extended monologue to his 'classic' Titans, Wally goes to see if Linda's OK.. and Kadabra grabs her. To be continued!
This really isn't a Titans book so far, it's a Wally West book.. that's fine, but I hate false marketing. I mean, there's a scene with Roy and Donna(I totally don't 'Ship them, as the kids say), but the rest is just Wally... Aqualad and Nightwing are just wallpaper, and Omen is only a couple panels better. Oh, and Mal and Bumblebee (who are retired and just had a baby)... I suspect she'll be involved before too long, the marketers seem to love her. On the plus side, I do like the rebirth costumes alot for Wally and Donna.
Plot: 2/5 Art: 4/5 Overall 6/10
