Funny that you picked 1974 of all years. it was the year I took my hiatus from buying comics that lasted until the Summer of 1976. 1974 midyear, the price of comics went from 20 to 25 cents. inflation was rampant back then. Marvel was also producing loads of Giant 50 cent titles as well as DC. The Atlas line of comics that looked like Marvel came out, a huge number of titles.
Up to then, I was compelled to regularly buy every title I had an interest in to get the full story of Marvel and DC.Now the cost of doing that shot up big time. It was also the first year I was supporting myself, paying rent and all. And a 20 year old reading comics was far from being a cool thing back then.
So 1974 is when I stopped buying and sold off my original collection that I had amassed from my beginnings. Most of those books which came out that year I wouldn't read until years later

Did you look at the Superman vs Amazing Spider-Man Treasury in the middle of your hiatus and say to yourself....not interested? ? That was the exact book that got me back into comics again. By mid 1976, I had just moved to Manhattan. And lo and behold, right across the street from my house, was one of the first comic book stores on the East Coast-Supersnipe Comics. I'd pass it by every day amazed that such a thing exited. Very small store and many times a line of people outside waiting their turn to get in The window displays would have that week's new books. And then I saw that Supes and Spidey treasury.I couldn't resist any longer. Like an ex-junkie I had to have that, just one little taste, that's it, no more. I got hooked again. And then spent the next 6 years buying back all the comics I used to own, plus the new, plus more of the old. Well, at least I now had my own apartment to keep them in

The Amazing World of DC ComicsWiki LinkIt's ran for 17 issues and I had at one time the first 11 and after awhile I've did not care for this Fanzine that I got through mail order and cancelled it after the 11th issue. I don't remember much of it but I do remember reading them.

I can't see codystarbuck's images either. That's me and the Mrs., by the way. Chaykin traveled in time and stole one of our family photos, for reference.

For me, it would have to be Man-Thing: Steve Gerber, Frank Brunner, Val Mayerik. In that same year, Mike Ploog would contribute some of the series' most memorable art. Plus, Howard the Duck! Now I was only 6 in 1974, so most of the trippy sub-text eluded me. But this book made my mother grimace, forever endearing it to me. I re-visited it a few years ago, assembling a full run of the title. All this time later, it continues to delight and amaze.

I think 1st Iron Fist too I don't think I've ever read Marvel Premiere 15. I mostly know Iron Fist through some random issues of Power Man Iron Fist and the Marvel Team Up ish he appeared in. I just loved this issue and it's one of the best of Iron Fist and it's loaded with action, impressive panels, and not a bad story. I wished I still had that issue!

Appeared a solid VF when I bought it for $2.00 back in '91. Shipped it off for grading a few months ago, stupidly failing to flip through it before doing so. It's missing the Marvel "Value" Stamp, a detail I had completely forgotten. It came back a dismal 2.0, with the offending defect emblazoned across the label. Hey, they don't call me "Fail" Maurice for nothin'.

Hey, they don't call me "Fail" Maurice for nothin'. Awesome book to give away Phil. Meh. My own stupidity really. I actually disputed it, half-heartedly. I accepted that the defect was significant, but I didn't feel a 2.0 was warranted. Their reply was that they agreed the book didn't deserve a 2.0, but that was the lowest grade they could reasonably assign it. Harsh. ETA: Cutting out the "value" stamp is one of the most heinous defects you can have, because it's deliberate and avoidable. It's especially egregious when it affects the story, as I think MP 15's does. It's kind of like a 60 year-old, three pack a day smoker trying to get life insurance. Just a sad state of affairs.

I remember someone else on this board getting stiffed with a Hulk #181 with the same flaw. So far I've been lucky, all books I've acquired had the stamp and in many instances (mostly any book I bought before 2009)...I never thought to ask about it being intact...*mops forehead*
