beccabear67, we have standing orders to not let anyone touch our scanner to sign for parcels or letters. We have been instructed to sign for them in their place. Also, I have received items returned from other countries that were refused, probably at the border. Again, I have worked the entire pandemic and am pretty sure you can't get it from letters or parcels, but the fear factor was pretty high there for a while.

Well, wasn't able to cancel my card due to the damn verification system, so I'll try again in the morning. In the mean-time, I went ahead and loaded some money into my cash app account, so if I am without my debt card for a few days, at least I'll be able to eat and uber

impulse , if you mean the fighting between our politicians , It hasn't really effected the day to day operation. We are still working and taking the time we need to do the job. My boss has informed us that changes are coming to save time in the office and get us out to the street quicker. And voting by mail will never be viable without problems, until the way the mail is distributed to the mailing offices is without error. As it is, I get about 50 letters that don't belong to my route a day. Not good. I meant specifically some of the news reports that mail is being slowed down, sorting machines that are working are being removed, etc. If that's not hitting you yet, I'm glad to hear it. I've had three gigs over the last three weekends (including one tomorrow) and I have at least one more before the end of the month, which is pretty unbelievable really; I'd pretty much resigned myself to not playing in front of other human beings until next year really. It's only a trickle of income compared to what I should be earning, of course, but I'm grateful for the work anyway. I'll also be applying for the second self-employed government grant on 17th August, so that should help to keep the wolves from the door for a while longer. Going forward though, I can't see me being back up to speed work-wise until well into next year. So, I think I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and think about getting myself a proper job. It will only be a temporary measure, of course, and I really don't want to find work anywhere that's gonna heighten my chances of getting COVID: so no supermarkets, warehouses etc. Back in the mid-2000s I gave up music for a few years and got a job at a marketing company. I worked my way up to being a team manager, so I think I'm gonna look for home work like that. You know, tele-marketing or data entry or benchmarking or something. I had a cursory look online last week and, actually, there are a fair few positions like that being advertised, which is good. I'll need to update my CV though. I last used it waaaaay back in 2006 or thereabouts.

I was talking to one of the carriers that works the route I'm on, specifically about the distribution center in Shreveport, and he said that Shreveport was working very short-handed to deal with something like 100,000 packages per day (partially due to distancing rules). He also mentioned Amazon uses USPS facilities, but have their own machines and employees, so USPS doesn't touch those packages until they get to the local post office. Not Covid-specific, but I had wondered why Amazon packages weren't slowed.

UPS, Fedex and Amazon drop off pallets of parcels to our station every work day. The truth is that the USPS delivers to every mailing address every day. Every neighborhood. None of the other delivery services do that nor want to do that. I also see that parcels are taking longer to get to their destination. A few months ago, it was explained to me that some facilities were closed because of the people calling in sick and parcels were being rerouted. But next time you get a first class parcel or priority parcel, look at the postmark. Those are arriving quickly as far as I can see.

Here in the UK, Royal Mail is an underrated and undervalued service. Like the US, they have a requirement to deliver to every address, from Cornish cities to the Shetlands. No other courier could or would do that. However, some couriers, such as Whistl, do drop off parcels and letters at Royal Mail depots.
People will only miss Royal Mail and the USPS once they’re gone. And ignorant oafs in elected offices have never really cared about such services, I guess they aren’t “glamorous” enough to warrant any kind of lobbying, nor are there any votes in defending such vital and under-appreciated services. It’s a shame.

Well, imagining a green rabbit on the other end of the telephone line just cheered me up! There's a new wrinkle... marketing companies employing people to do funny voices as beloved cartoon characters to keep people from haning up? Oops, you might have competition some of those jobs...
