I’m pretty tired of living in interesting times.

I’m pretty tired of living in interesting times. Ha! I hear that. It's a Chinese curse most vicious.

Not that I miss the Politics thread at all and not that I'm wanting to instigate a political discussion now, but these have certainly been some interesting times for American politics in recent weeks. It would be interesting to discuss it all with some of you Americans, just to compare thoughts and opinions on everything that's been going on. An assasination attempt and an incumbant dropping out in the span of one week? Yeah, that's enough to define a generation without all the rest.

Yes, Liefeld wrote, directed, produced, and starred in a film based on a character for which he can take sole credit because he is the only one to have written and developed him.

But I thought Trump getting shot at would at the very least humble his approach to life and politics. It did the exact opposite and the way he was carrying on, you'd think he ended up like Regan Not that I miss the Politics thread at all and not that I'm wanting to instigate a political discussion now, but these have certainly been some interesting times for American politics in recent weeks. It did the exact opposite and the way he was carrying on, you'd think he ended up like Regan I really hoped for the same thing. But realistically, I knew that it was unlikely. Still, you hope against hope, don't you?

I really hoped for the same thing. But realistically, I knew that it was unlikely. Still, you hope against hope, don't you? As messed up as this Country has gotten lately, I don't know what to hope for anymore. If we have anyone to blame, it's ourselves In over a half century of living, I have yet to see a time where most people felt like "yeah, things are going pretty well, we've got great politicians". The past tends to be with rose-tinted glasses I think. Division, propaganda, shenanigans, flat out lies, and everyone pointing the finger at the other person is how it is, always has been, and I believe always will be. It's always a promise of "change", and nothing ever does or will. It's Animal Farm all day long, those who seek the power always end up turning into the very things they said they were opposed to as power corrupts. The best way to have hope in my very humble opinion is to realize that politics is all fake, and focus one's life on the things you can control. Don't miss those little opportunities to touch someone's life today, whether they be a family member, friend, co-worker, or even a stranger. That will matter much more in the long run than who and what you think you are voting for. Even just taking the time to share a kind word (heck, do it right here on this forum and respond to someone's post on something and share some niceness) will make the world a better place better than any vote you could ever cast. Again, just in my very humble opinion. I very well may be an idiot, but I'm a happy idiot, and no politician has taken that from me nor will I allow them to.

So the civil rights victories of the '60s never happened? For one example out of thousands. We'll never have unanimous agreement, and even good change will never be perfect, but encouraging people to wash their hands of politics only ever favors the bad actors. One thing I've learned (not in the sense of observing and drawing conclusions, but in an academic sense sense) since the U.S. 2016 elections is that propaganda can be used not only to advance specific lies, but also that the seeding of B.S. all over the place makes people doubt the sincerity and validity of everything in general, thus cultivating an environment where liars and honest folks are always on the same footing. Do both. Vote your conscience and be nice to people. Doing one doesn't mean you can't do the other. It's condescending to tell me I only "think" I'm voting for my candidate, or my issues. I damn well know who I'm voting for, and what they represent, and what the other guys represent. I know we're skirting the rules in trying to talk only vaguely about politics, but if there were no limits here, I would challenge you to point out where my intended votes this year are somehow "fake" (whatever that means). There's "politics" in the sense of back-room deals and quid-pro-quo and who has a beef with who. But there's also "politics" in the sense of deciding which rules we want our society to abide by. The first meaning is where you get into the unsavory stuff that people usually think about when they hear the word. But the second meaning is all about morality. I don't know why so many people ignore the second meaning. If anybody wants to relinquish their moral voice, that's their business, but I will challenge anyone who claims that voting is never a moral action.

I'm 57 and starting to get nostalgic for Nixon. That's how bad it has gotten, in my lifetime. At least then, you could get the two parties to reach a compromise and actually produce some legislation that actually did something productive.
