I'm going to be MIA for the next week or so. We have a winter storm closing in on us, so I'll be hunkering down at my sister's for the duration. It's a question of safety, mine and hers.
Cei-U! Catch you on the flipside!
Be safe and take care friend .

I have Back Issue and Alter Ego on my pull list at the LCS. I added Jack Kirby Collector to it.
Then I tried to add RetroFan. I sent a message via Facebook to my LCS. I was told by staff in the store that the FB inbox is monitored constantly - and that it's better and more convenient for them to receive messages that way rather than be asked on the counter. The message was "Seen" (one tick). I presumed that meant order would be fulfilled. I found out it wasn't. And this isn't the first time this has happened.
Recently, I wanted to set up a monthly payment for a small charity. I sent two e-mails (they are Luddites, it seems, you have to e-mail them and request the form by post, there's no mechanism to set up a payment on their website). No reply despite two e-mails. No reply via social media. Screw it. I guess they don't want my money.
And if I had a £1 for every company that never responded to e-mails, I'd be very rich now!
We had the Bronze Age, Iron Age, etc. We live in the Ignorance Age right now. From energy companies not returning calls over payment issues to businesses refusing to return e-mails, it seems many organisations don't actually want your money.

Bundle up warmly, be safe and wait out the storm sir with hot tea and some comic book reading. Or if you find energy, keep plugging away on writing your book, cuz we the dedicated readers are waiting patiently. No rest for the weary and sore and aching and tired and poor and befuddled oh great Poobah!

We had the Bronze Age, Iron Age, etc. We live in the Ignorance Age right now. From energy companies not returning calls over payment issues to businesses refusing to return e-mails, it seems many organisations don't actually want your money. Just a quick question (as I used to do pulls for an LCS). How long ago did you message? Id they tell you they missed it or did a new issue come out that wasn't in your pull? Sometimes when people add stuff to their pulls and its something they don't normally order or don't order shelf copies for, it takes 2-3 issues to get added because they add it it with the next issue they order which is 2-3 months before it comes out. Some smaller press stuff doesn't allow for increases to existing orders and reorders take just as long as new orders, sometimes longer as Diamond gives them a lower priority than processing their new orders. This is one of the big issues with Diamond and the direct market-it is not end customer friendly and doesn't allow for impulse buys or quick turnaround on customer requests. -M

I put the request in months ago. I predicted ahead for the point I wanted to start collecting Retrofan. To be honest, a lot of the old guard left the LCS, and the long-term manager is gone, and many are saying how sloppy it can be. I don't think the Facebook mailbox is as monitored or as solid as it should be. I allowed enough time to add those Twomorrows publications to my pull list based on the logic you state; but I think, and others have said the same, that the FB mailbox is not getting the due attention. Yet we were advised to use that rather than take up time with counter staff.

It seems to be the way of the world. I mean, with that charity I mentioned (Shipwrecked Mariners' Society), if two e-mails and a Twitter private message don't get a response, when you want to request the form that will allow you to donate monthly, then we truly are living in the age of unreturned communications.
It all seemed so simple back in the era of letters only.
A prior profession of mine was clerical. No-one is perfect, but I took all messages down on a post-it note. With a phone number. Everyone got a response from me if they'd missed me or required a callback. Maybe simple is better. The LCS should return to the system of asking the counter staff. Yes, it can create a queue, and someone like me would take no more time than necessary, but I think they've spread themselves thin with the Facebook mailbox.

I am in the midst of a really bad case of reader's block. Prose (fiction and non-fiction), comics, nothing is working for me.
Sigh.

I'm sure it's good. It looks interesting. But trying to move into a thousand page non-fiction book when I can't even get through a comic book is likely not the answer.

I am in the midst of a really bad case of reader's block. Prose (fiction and non-fiction), comics, nothing is working for me. Sigh. When I get this way with comics I will dive into some good old short stories from the MASTERS of unreality: KIRBY and DITKO. Their classic science fiction and fantasy and horror and giant monster stuff from the Atlas days always helps to jump start me. Should it be a block on getting into book reading, then I find myself going to a compilation of short stories delving into something older like some Shakespeare or REH or ERB. Those reignite the reading passion for me!

I am in the midst of a really bad case of reader's block. Prose (fiction and non-fiction), comics, nothing is working for me. Sigh. It may sound weird, but have you tried some poetry? It can be genre stuff (like Lovecraft or Poe's poems), or narrative poetry (either epics like Gilgamesh, Beowulf or the Homeric stuff to some shorter verses), or lyrical stuff (some of Bob Dylan's stuff to Dylan Thomas' stuff could fit here), just something to get you into a different rhythm of reading. Even if its just reading the lyrics of some favorite songs or artists in a song book. Plays could do that to, as the rhythm of it being all dialogue could change things up for you and possibly shake off the doldrums inflicting you currently. Just something that doesn't feel like the same ole same ole and might break the block. -M
