This is really about setting myself up for the final stage of my career. My current situation doesn't appear to have long-term viability, maybe 3-5 more years, and at 46 today, I don't want to be out in the job market NEEDING to find work at the age of 50 or more. Ageism is rampant, possibly the last acceptable bias in hiring, as companies are constantly looking to go younger (which typically lends itself to going cheaper in conjunction). This is about finding something relatively stable for the next 10-15 years until I can reasonably start considering retirement (or at least a shift in my work life, maybe to consulting or doing something part-time for a non-profit). I get it. I hope I am in my last job until retirement. I turn 58 in less than a month. I need to work at least another 7 years. 9 more would be ideal financially. And I too fear getting pushed out in favor of someone younger who would command a lower salary.

I just turned 63, and I'm hoping to keep the job I have for another seven and a half years. My wife is talking about transitioning to part-time in a few years; we'll see about that.

I was able to work part time for a while but I am back working fulltime to build up my retirement funds and do more traveling.

A company that has "cleaned house entirely" may do so again? That would be my concern. A foot of snow over here this morning, and really wild winds tonight. I've been expecting the power to go out for the last couple of days. So far it hasn't and they say they have lots of people waiting on call. I did lose the on-screen guide on the digital cable tv for awhile though. Maybe someone is doing a really good job and lessons have been learned from other years? That would be very nice!

Okay, while it is great that a lot of people jumped in and supported this bookstore, but the reality is why in the hell does it have to be like this? All or nothing? SUPPORT your local bookstore/LCS/etc or they will disappear! A shame that it takes a celebrity writer to light a fire under people's butts.

I'm a big fan of bookstores. Not many independent ones here, but we have Waterstones.
I like bookstores for the serendipity angle. I went to buy a book once (an autobiography) but came across a book about the NFL. And then there was a medical book, half-price, that I bought. You discover new things.
I do have eBooks, but physical media is important to me. Also, in order to be challenged, and not fall into predictable patterns, I always buy the Waterstones Non-Fiction Book of the Month. No matter the subject. I don't want to be a person who buys only what he knows and follows only the authors he likes. I will often go in and say, "Any new sci-fi writers you can recommend?"
The authors I like are Stephen King (sometimes), Dan Brown, Jeffrey Archer, etc. The ones who are alive and still writing are those (I like many historical authors). But I don't want to just read them.

The most striking thing to me on a re-read of Transmetropolitan #1 is the idea that there would still be actual journalists in the future.

May I respectfully ask why you want to work until you are 70? For financial security, basically. I could start taking Social Security now, but if I wait until I'm 70, they'll pay me about twice as much. I'm in good health, my cholesterol is low, so I have a good chance of living a lot more years. I took out a 30-year mortgage when I was 60. My wife has some health issues that end up costing about $2000 a month. I'm going to put as much as I can into my IRA and 401k in the hope that I won't outlive my money. My tentative retirement date is July 1, 2027, because my employer pays their annual bonus at the end of the fiscal year, on June 30. The way medical care is improving, I think I have a shot at living until the US Tricentennial on July 4, 2076. I'll be 119 years old.

So...apparently the cure for my reader's block is a combination of a re-read of Transmetropolitan and a re-read of Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair.
Good to know.

I just received a really sweet message on Facebook from a musician I met in Fort Payne, Alabama, during our U.S. holiday last year. He was just asking after my wife and I, and wondering when we might be coming back over. It was lovely to hear from him, but it also really made me pine for America. I don't think we're gonna get back over there this year (we're trying to save some money to pay for a loft conversion), but we've pencilled in a return to the States for 2021. Of course, with such a vast country to explore, the chances of us returning to places we've already been are slim, but if money were no object, I'd be Alabama bound tomorrow.
Anyway, I'm just feeling sorta wistful for America at the moment and wanted to share.
