abcnews.go.com/US/mcdonalds-employees-shot-angry-customer-told-dining-room/story?id=70553451Sucks. I was just thinking recently about the days I worked in retail/service industry. Largely it was such as a demoralizing experience. It was difficult to take gratification in my work since it essentially consisted of picking up after people, and having everything screwed up again the next day. Also dealing with entitled, whiny customers was such a pain. I think this quote from the comments section of the Reddit posting for this article summed it up quite well: Low pay, terrible scheduling, having people treat you like something they stepped in...it can be a nightmare. I'm glad I got out, and unless things got really bad I couldn't go back to working that type of job again. F society in this regard.

I generally try to eat healthier than this on a whole, but I would be lying if I claimed to never slum it and indulge in a Twinkie on occasion. I usually have to get a box because they are not commonly or conveniently sold individually, and the cost difference between a box at the grocery store is negligible next to a solo cost at a convenience store, nor worth the extra trip when I'm indulging my impulsive sweet tooth. So it usually goes something like this. "Man, I want a treat as a reward for buying groceries. Oh, look, Twinkies! I haven't had those in years. $2 for a box? sure." First Twinkie: "Oh man, that was so good. So much sugar." Second Twinkie: Strikingly less satisfying than the first, but still enjoyable. It's cake after all. Third in a row: diminishing returns, leaden weight in stomach, self-loathing commences. "Ugh, I'm not having these again. So gross. What was I thinking." A few years later... "Hey, Twinkies!" I can absolutely attest to this, but not with sweets. I really deserve an indulgence for doing all the grocery shopping in this pandemic. First three jalapeno poppers: Oh man I'm gonna gain a pound eating these Next five jalapenos poppers: Man I so deserve this cheat meal Rest of the box of jalapeno poppers: I'm so not weighing myself in the morning

Yeah, this Pandemic is making a lot of people act crazy and irrational. Seems more like something you'd see in a Judge Dredd serial, not real life

There is a lot of overreach by the leaders of some states. This is a bad time for the US.

There is a lot of overreach by the leaders of some states. This is a bad time for the US. On the flip side, there are some state leaders who aren't "reaching" far enough, either out of ignorance and sheer incompetence or in an effort to please and curry favor with a certain individual who lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC.

Posted this on the R.I.P. thread but some people may not peek in there at much.
Paul Kupperberg is reporting on Twitter that Marty Pasko has passed away. If true, and I have to think that Kupperberg would be someone who would know, Pasko was 65, which is seeming pretty young at this point.
Pasko has the distinction of being the only pro I ever got into a flame war with on CBR.

When I talked with my mother yesterday, I asked about her memories of V-E Day. She told me there was an impromptu parade thru the middle of town (Nutley NJ), which I don't think she'd ever mentioned before. Somehow they got some tanks and trucks and soldiers together on short notice. She was almost 14 years old at the time, and she and her friends went to the parade to check out the cute soldier boys. It was very much on her mind that her future husband was probably in the military somewhere in the world, and she was regularly praying for his safety. It turned out that she was right, he was in the Marine Corps at the time, stationed on Guam preparing for the invasion of Japan that didn't happen. Both of my parents were always happy and grateful that the atomic bomb ended the war so quickly. The way they heard it, the planners figured that the first four waves of the invasion would be slaughtered, and the fifth or sixth wave would finally crack the Japanese defenses. As it happened, my father's unit was sent to guard the Chinese port of Tientsin (now spelled Tianjin) against Mao's army. Later he spent several years stationed in Japan during the Korean war. After that he moved to New York and got a job as an orderly in a hospital, where he met a certain student nurse who'd been praying for him without knowing who he was. They were together from ~1952 to his death in 2011. She's going to turn 89 in a few weeks.
PS she kept her family's ration books from the war. In recent years when she was still able to, she'd go to local schools and show the kids the ration books and talk about the war years.

Thanks for sharing these warm memories of a time that still seems as if it should be just 20 years ago, Rob Allen. So glad that your dad made it through without having to be in what would have been another gruesome chapter of a gruesome war. Three of my best friends in high school (and since) grew up in Nutley. Two lived on High Street, the third on Oakridge Avenue. By all accounts, it was a great town back then. Wish your mom a Happy Birthday from me. What a world she has seen!

A friend of my parents who was in his early teens on V-E Day has a memory of not being allowed to go to the head shavings of collaborationist women in the town center. This was in a small town in northern Holland. "Aw Mooooom, all my friends are allowed to go."

I just completed my reviews of every (surviving) Bela Lugosi film ever made after five and a half months. It's the longest I've ever consistently worked on a single project here at the CCF. We may be almost half-way through the year for all of you, but it's a new year for me, and now I have the fun of getting to decide where to put my energy next -- continuing old review threads I haven't touched since December, starting a new one, JUST reading for pleasure? I have no idea what I'll do, and that excites me!
