I wasn’t sure where to ask this, but is there a thread for discussion of fanzines anywhere? I did a search with no success.

I wasn’t sure where to ask this, but is there a thread for discussion of fanzines anywhere? I did a search with no success. there have been a couple of threads about books and magazines about comics, more the pro zines like Comics Journal or Amazing Heroes, but not that I recall about the amateur zones. There has been some discussion of particular zines or AMAs in various threads over the years, but no prolonged focus discussions that I can recall. I know I inquired about and we discussed Conan and REH centered zines like AMRA in one of the Conan or sword and sorcery threads, around about the time we were starting out here, but as far as I can recall, no, there hasn't been a lot of dedicated discussion of the topic. I feel there are a few here that may be more versed in it that others based on what I know of their comic backgrounds and interests, but for whatever reasonit hasn't come up much here. I would love to see such a conversation though I wouldn't have all that much to contribute, it would be fascinating to read and learn though. -M

Can’t help but think this is fake (could a tree grow under those circumstances?):

Caught a piece on the local news earlier about a need for more guide dog puppies. Not sure about the rest of the world, but in the UK, it’s only Labrador Retrievers that can be guide dogs. German Shepherds used to do it here, but Wiki has this:
Is there really only one breed suitable for the role?
I know not all would. I think the Great Dane is a lovely dog, but I think it’s too big (and not exactly the most intelligent) for guide work. I know there are aggressive breeds that would not be suitable, plus very small breeds that’d be useless.
But is there really no decent-sized breed that could match the temperament of a Labrador Retriever? It’s a shame there is a shortage.

I would suggest the Border Collie, but in most cases they're too damn smart for their own good, and highly energetic. Nevertheless, they do make good service dogs in certain situations, but some of their breed traits have to be trained "down" or suppressed (through training) to match the needs of the owner.
Incredible breed though, especially if you live in the countryside.

Newfoundland dogs are very friendly and even-tempered but I imagine they're too big to be good guide dogs. They probably don't like to do a long walks, etc.

Blimey, I never expected to find this when I delved into this topic: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guide_horseSize would seem to be an issue, and the Wiki link does mention bladder issues.

A woman who lived in our dormitary had a golden retriever as her guide dog. It was superbly trained, fiercely loyal, and smart as a whip. Unfortunately, it was killed defending its owner (who was not injured in the incident but was forced to leave school) from a pack of feral dogs that had been terrorizing the campus for months. It was only after this tragedy that the university took steps to round up and euthanize the pack. Dunno if lawyers got involved, but it wouldn't surprise me.
Cei-U! I summon the not-so-fond memory!
