Well, on the flip side, I guess that's one way that our strict legal adherence to a shot being 25ml is a good thing; regardless of whether it's on the rocks on not, a shot of whisky is a shot of whisky. Which is quite a let-down to hard-drinking yanks who wind up in a pub in Inverness, expecting tall pours of scotch in its country of origin. Well yes, quite. Like I say, mean and stingy. And the Scots are even more stingy and tight than the English are! Like the joke goes... "Did you hear about the Scotsman who dropped a £1 coin? When he went to pick it up, it hit him on the back of his head."

Correct, and that was part of the original reason, but it was largely negated over the last few decades by offering free refills on most soft drinks, which is still somewhat of a rarity in the UK.
Yeah, I was gonna say to Hal that the endless refills over there in the U.S. kind of negate any money saving intent with soft drinks. We don't generally have endless refills of water, coffee, tea etc over here as the norm either. If you want another drink, you have to buy it. So yeah, it's still a much more generous cultural norm than in the UK. Soda, maybe, in some fast food places, I guess, but not for iced tea or coffee at places like Dunkin' Donuts or Starbucks, etc., and definitely not liquor. (Ah, for the 70s, when bars had two-for-one nights all week.)

Here in the UK, Toby Carvery and Harvester allow refills of soft drinks (I had Pepsi Max in there a few years ago). I’m sure similar businesses do.
When I’m World President, refills of beer, wine and spirits will definitely be allowed…

When I’m World President, refills of beer, wine and spirits will definitely be allowed… If I recall correctly, Brewers' Fayre also allowed soft drink refills with certain meals... somewhat average food, but reasonably priced and often cleverly placed next to many Premiere Inn locations, which makes them popular among punters with a family. Yeah, but iced tea in most restaurants. And coffee in diners. Though almost without exception diner coffee is undrinkable swill. Waffle House being an exception. Not meant to compete with barrista concoctions, but the WH's coffee is consistently good, they have their own custom roast, and they don't let it sit on a heating burner forever either... at least they're not supposed to.

I am one of those uncultured whipper snappers that could care less what coffee tastes like. I do like some sugar and that's it. Coffee (and even as much as drink alcoholic beverages) and even alcohol are tools. Sure it's nice if it tastes good. But both beverages do the job even if they don't taste good.

Jeez...fussy eater! I gave to say, the diners I went to in New York City, Hoboken in New Jersey, and throughout the Deep South all had pretty excellent coffee, as far as I recall. At least, I don't remember ever thinking, "wow...this coffee tastes like crap." These weren't chains though (I've no idea why anyone would sully themselves by visiting Starbucks or similar), these were privately owned small places. I also loved Cracker Barrel restaurants, which my wife and I discovered in Tennessee and Mississippi. Great food and great service. Though it's slightly weird that they all look identical inside, irrespective of where you are. Although, I'm pretty sure that's the point.

Most of the diners around here get their coffee from Farmer Brothers which is the coffee service equivalent of McDonalds. Think really weak Folgers filtered through used jockey shorts and you're coming close to the lack of flavor.

But definitely I've had free tea, coffee, and other soft drink refills in various diners and restaurants in the U.S. I'm pretty sure I've had endless Cokes in some places over there too. I've absolutely no idea why anyone would ever go to Starbucks or similar.

If mine has a brand name I recognise (usually Nescafe), even if I'm not sure of the blend, I drink it. But I like mine creamy.

The flavor is pretty much the point though. Drink what you want, but if the effect is all you care about, there are plenty of mood altering pills that can do the same thing without having to drink bad coffee or cheap alcohol.

One of these days, not too far off, I'm gonna be coming to Denver and thereabouts -- maybe into Wyoming. So, I might even make it into Idaho to find out what your diner coffee is like.

Made the customs guy roll his eyes again....got a nice few book books sent to me and the sender used a Conair Hair-dryer box to ship them in. It gets the Rags package of the month award.
