I get a thrill whenever I buy comics at a show or a store. That's a reward in itself. I found that the thrill of the hunt and the find was a bigger joy than possessing the comic. I agree! Just the idea of not knowing what you're going to find is wonderful in of itself. I remember when I found a copy of Plastic Man Archives 1 for cheap at a flea market. Has to be one of my favorite finds, though I also wish I'd gotten the All-Star Squadron Showcase that was beside it, but you can't have it all

I remember when I found a copy of Plastic Man Archives 1 for cheap at a flea market. Has to be one of my favorite finds, though I also wish I'd gotten the All-Star Squadron Showcase that was beside it, but you can't have it all The best find I ever had was on a trip to Charlotte, on a Saturday, to hunt for back issues. I was stationed in Charleston, SC, and it was a 3 hour drive, but, they had the big Heroes Aren't Hard to Find store, with tons of stuff. I stopped in Columbia, SC, along the way (about midway between the two cities) and picked up some stuff at a couple of shops I knew there, plus a couple of used bookstores, for paperbacks. In Charlotte, I bought a bunch of items from my list and the clerk told me about there warehouse sale, going on a couple of blocks away. he gave me a map and I drove over and found a huge stack of Treasury editions, plus a bunch of magazine comics, like Warrior and Marvel Preview. However, it was in a box of Comics Journal issues that I find my King Solomon's Mine: the issue with the Bill Watterson interview. Watterson (creator of Calvin & Hobbes) rarely did interviews, ; but did a small one for Fantagraphics' Honk magazine and a long one, for the Journal. He got into everything, including the fight with his syndicate over merchandising, his vacation from the strip and the new formatting when he came back, for the Sundays. Lots of talk about Krazy Kat & Herriman and Pogo & Walt Kelly. The only thing that would have made it better was if they had the issue with the Dave Stevens interview.

I also appreciate Mr. Eco's absolution for making only negative progress with my book backlog over the decades.
I have just started on one part of the backlog, however. I saw a post here from someone mentioning being an Alexandre Dumas fan, which reminded me that I am too; and since I was just about to take some things out of storage, maybe I should include a Dumas book.
The random volume I took out of the container was one of his Valois trilogy (La Reine Margot, a.k.a. Queen Margot, a.k.a. Marguerite de Valois; La Dame de Monsoreau, a.k.a. Chicot the Jester; and The Forty-Five Guardsmen), so I pulled out the rest of them, and also the three other related novels (Ascanio; The Two Dianas; and The Page of the Duke of Savoy). That should keep me busy for a bit.
Can we see a shot of the covers? I haven't read any of the Valois books and would like to see how yours look.
I don't have an account with an image hoster (and kinda wish the forum allowed direct picture uploads), but you're not missing much. All except La Reine Margot are old, plain blue/blue-grey clothbound books. LRM is the Oxford World's Classics edition: global.oup.com/academic/product/la-reine-margot-9780199538447?cc=us&lang=en&

So my wife heard a banging sound last night while we were sleeping and I woke up to find the 50 mph wind gusts had done this to the back of our house. Trying to find someone to fix it on a holiday weekend has been a bear. -M

Well, werebear's are lawful good, so you can appeal to their better nature to do things for the greater good when you can't get a contractor to come out on a holiday weekend. -M

Good luck with the repairs.

Ugh, that sucks. About 10 years ago, the satellite dish installed in our house before we had moved in ripped out of the roof and was dangling by the cable. That was a fun experience for us as new homeowners to figure out.
I hope you find someone soon.

first visit by Old Man Winter- Jan. 15, 2024--
Nothing like our members in the Plains, Big Sky or Great Lakes states, but we got our first real taste of winter this weekend. While you folks are accustomed to this, it's a bit more rare in my neck of the woods. We usually get at least one snowfall a year, but normally the temps stay in the upper 20's and we don't get more than 3 inches tops. Often, the roads are clear by 200pm the next day.
It started snowing early Sunday evening (Jan 14). Temps dropped overnight and this morning it was 10 deg. F when I got up. The high today was 18 deg. F, and it's dropping again-- overnight tonight is supposed to bottom out at 8 deg., and the low overnight Tuesday is supposed to be -7 deg. F. Keep in mind that while we have single-digit temps on occasion almost every winter, it's extremely rare for us to get sub-zero temps of any kind.
Fortunately, I did most of my hard-freeze prep last week, as we knew this was coming, it was only a matter of time. So far we've had 8 inches of snow accumulation, but don't expect any more tonight or tomorrow, other than the occasional flurry.
Here's a pic taken from my front porch a few minutes ago (approx. 8pm Central time)

The promised 3-5 inches skipped Huntsville, but the icy roads and single digit temperatures will keep things shut down tomorrow and maybe Wednesday. No "snow day" since I can telework; tomorrow is the start of week 20 counting down to retirement!

Huntsville may have barely dodged a bullet on the snow, but I understand that up the road a ways toward Ardmore and Hazel Green and Fayetteville TN they did get a bit of the white stuff.
