I have been feeling a bit down lately, but my brother's gift for my upcoming birthday is sure to cheer me up: A weekend in Amsterdam with tickets to see Ms. Patti Labelle in concert! And this will be our hotel: That looks like the work of a deranged architect or Photoshop gone wild.

CHINA HAS INVADED MY FILM-BLOG!!!! I've been running my film-blog for about four years without incident, and without many comments: NATURALISTIC! UNCANNY! MARVELOUS!Now, possibly because some US studio has acquired the rights for a couple of Chinese films I reviewed back in Jan 2014, I got a notice from Blogger telling me that they'd reset my blogpost. which reviewed those 2 films, to "draft." The language of the notification is naturally written with such legal circumlocutions that it's not clear what was the offending material. Presumably it's the image of a lobby-card for one of the two films, since that's the only image reproduced. The message says that I can file a counter-claim if I think that I have the right to post the material, but what are the chances that Blogger will find against someone with deep pockets who threatens to sue them? I think I have to assume that the lawyers behind this film have done this not just with my blog, but with any blogs they located that reproduced images w/o their permission. I'm wondering if there's other recent precedent for this sort of "alleged copyright infringement." Many years ago both Disney and the Lucasfilm people went after Internet people who used their images w/ permission, but eventually wiser heads prevailed, when the big shots decided that the free publicity was more important. Possibly the company that produced the films is antsy about releasing the films in the U.S. and wants to make sure their rights are protected. Anyway, only the one post has been set to draft, and though the content of the blogger-letter is evasive, I think they will allow me to republish the review sans the image. I don't really care that much about the review, much less the two movies themselves, so it's no skin off my nose. If my hypothesis is correct, it should be harder right now to find illustrated reviews online for the Chinese films TAI CHI ZERO and TAI CHI HERO. Ah-- my first purge--! Sounds like a VERY clear case of "fair use", so I would definitely counter-claim. That kind of thing does not go to trial.

So it's been several days and I never got my tip money. Just talked to the regional manager and he's in agreement with me. So is the store manager but she's too mad at me to speak to me, but she did speak to him and tell him I was right. So he's trying to work it out right now. She is going to be SO MAD when she has to apologize to me and I get no punishment for screwing off on the busiest day of the year.

Well, so I've been away for a while. How's everybody doing? Shax has become a dark lord and everyone else has been replaced by Skrulls, but other than that, I think we're all good! -M

After a second phone call from the regional manager, I may be getting fired, but it's out of his hands. I refused to work the past two days because my boss refused to give me my tip money. He said it's technically job abandonment. I said I figured that as a possibility, but if I do get fired I'm going to be a nightmare for corporate and detailed exactly how and why. After the hour long conversation I was notified tomorrow when I meet with him I'll get my tip money, the mileage I wasn't paid when moving supplies from one location to another, and the hours I worked off the clock the day I was hired while conducting training. As quick as he was to pay me out for all this stuff, without even confirming it, leads me to believe he's in damage control mode and just doesn't want anything left for me to sue over. But as a condition of being hired by these types of evil corporations, you sign a contract waiving your right to sue the company for anything no matter what. Instead the company will pay for independent arbitration, which is probably what I'm going to demand. I likely won't actually get anything since he's basically cutting a check no questions asked tomorrow, but it will still cost the company money, waste time for management, and be another black mark on my managers record with the company. I'll find another minimum wage night and weekend job before they find my replacement.

I may have gotten myself fired from the pizza job today. Yesterday there was some confusion when I was given my bank. The manager was supposed to enter $20, but only entered $2. So I gave her $18 back instead of making her log me off, cash me out, and log me on again. Seemed easy. Every delivery reduces $1.20 from what you owe back for that bank. So if you do ten deliveries, at the end of the night you will owe $8. If you do enough deliveries, the store can owe you money by the end of the night. Well, since I only got $2 I should have been in the positive by my second delivery. At the end of the night I was asked to pay $7 as if I had a $20 bank. I told the manager and she said she was tired and going home and didn't feel like fixing it tonight, but would tomorrow. That right there is incredibly irresponsible for a manager to do. If the cash register was short $18 you better believe she'd stay until she figured out what the problem was. Today I showed up an hour early because I knew she wouldn't have looked into it in the morning. I came in and asked if she did, she said no but she'll get around to it. I said I'm not clocking in until I get my money. This is how business works in my experience. It would have taken her five minutes to just look at the slip I signed at the end of the night when I cashed out to see what was wrong. I already told her exactly what was wrong and exactly what I'm owed. It's easy. She just doesn't want to do it. I regularly have to chase her down for things like mileage if I go to another store to pick up supplies, or to actually sign me in if I clock in early, since the time clock won't let me do it with manager approval. She says she'll get around to it and never does. And never adjusts the clock later. So anyway, I waited an hour, that entire time she kept herself busy in the back doing inconsequential work in the walk in solely to avoid me. After the hour was up and it was time to clock in I told my coworkers I waited an hour and wasn't going to wait another. I walked out. Today is the busiest day of the year for pizza, and we were given two weeks warning that everyone would be working today and anyone who flakes is fired. So tomorrow I'll see if she sticks to it. If not, and if she doesn't have my money, I'll be calling the regional manager and getting transferred to another store anyway. Was she hot? I'm guessing no. Can't recall seeing many beautiful women as pizza place managers.

It might be worth checking into.

Here's a creepy ad banner that just showed up on our site: From the wording, it seems directed at a kid to purchase for "mom and dad". Why would a kid be involved with "seamless intimacy to bring mom and dad closer"? Is this intended as a Valentine's Day gift for the parents? If so, ick.
