I got my wisdom teeth pulled after having them be in my mouth for years. God it was hell. Six in all. I can't remember a more painful experience. I think what made it worse was that I had some cavities in those areas. The novocaine they shot in your mouth was torture too. Had about eight shots before it all began. Hope you're not suffering too much after the wisdom teeth extraction. I was lucky and never had to have my wisdom teeth removed. My Navy dentist assured me my "mouth was big enough". Uh, thanks, I guess...

I think what made it worse was that I had some cavities in those areas. The novocaine they shot in your mouth was torture too. Had about eight shots before it all began. I needed to start the plans for fixing my teeth though even though it's been costly thus far. I paid out of pocket for the first two things I did: deep cleaning and wisdom teeth removal. Now the next step is getting braces. My dentist specializes in braces at her practice and keeps pushing me towards getting them, but I really want invisalign. I don't think she deals with invisalign much, and she told me I probably wouldn't be a great candidate for it. Apparantely I have some crowding in the lower front and a slight cross bite at the top (isn't invisalign designed to fix all this though?) However after doing some research myself and seeing what invisalign can do for people with even worse cases than mine, I'm really skeptical. I don't think that she's lying, but I got the feeling she wants me to just get the braces for some reason. I want to get a second opinion though. I know in about a week when I get my stitching removed for the wisdom teeth I'll be asked again. I want to see an orthodontist that specializes in invisalign in the bay area. I get the feeling I'll be told I'd be a great candidate. I hate having to tell my dentist I'll be looking elsewhere so that's going to suck. I just have the feeling I'm being played for the practice's benefit is all. By the way, I think I should get dental insurance now. I'm thinking of utilizing Covered California for dental. There cutoff is in about three days I think. Does anyone have experience with this? I remember getting Covered California for medical and it was a nightmare. The website was extremely confusing. I was there was a place I could go to talk person to person for this kind of thing. And over the phone doesn't help either. I need someone to literally show me the piece of paper and talk to me about options. Or maybe I shouldn't go with Covered California. I think I only needed that for medical anyway. Perhaps I could look into other dental insurance. But I would think it would be good to have everything under the same umbrella? I don't know. I'm confused. I just know I wouldn't be getting insurance through my work because I only work part time at my place. Six??? I thought people had only 4 (if they have any at all -- my mother, supposedly, didn't, & for years I hoped I didn't, either, but found out differently as I grew up, of course). I had one removed when I was 34 & another about 10 years ago. Wasn't a big deal, really ... only complication arose when the painkiller I was prescribed after the first one turned out to make me itch like mad. (I didn't really need it, but took it as a precaution.)

Or a dentist that was just really into pulling teeth.

Poking around on Google just now, I see that while 4 is indeed the norm, as many as 10 have been known to occur.
*shudder*

Uh, thanks, I guess... I only had one removed about 20 years ago because it was growing against a molar and putting pressure on it. The other 3 are using the space that is there, too.

Seems like I had a couple of baby teeth pulled when I was a kid, but that might not actually have happened. The two wisdom teeth, of course, I'm quite sure about.
Otherwise, I've had a couple of root canals as well, not to mention lord knows how many crowns (including on baby teeth) & probably enough fillings to buy a yacht for a dentist or two.
Luckily, the insurance where I've worked the last 8 1/2 years includes dental coverage. First time that's been the case for me.

Yeah, I've had my share of fillings and at least one root canal as well. Luckily most of the fillings were paid by Uncle Sam in the Navy and dental insurance covered most of the rest. Years ago my wife had to get a dental implant to replace a tooth, and even with insurance it was hundreds of dollars.

I think what made it worse was that I had some cavities in those areas. The novocaine they shot in your mouth was torture too. Had about eight shots before it all began. My God man! Rest easy bud. I definitely recommend dental insurance if you can afford it. I don't know anything about Covered California. I have Guardian and they cover just about everything other than cosmetic stuff (braces, veneers, etc). Now that my wife's "brain tumor" seems to be fine, my 6-year old daughter is apparently losing her hearing. Negative pressure in both ears is leading to permanent hearing loss due to dozens of ear infections. We've tried tubes, I guess the next step is adenoids or some other surgery. She already has a hearing aid in one ear, so it was a shock to see that it's happening in the other ear too. We're going to the Ear House Clinic in L.A. to get her the best possible help. You feel like a failure as a parent when this happens. Maybe I should have done something sooner? We took her to the doctor every time she had an ear infection, maybe I didn't advocate enough or push the envelope on the fact that she required serious attention on the matter. On the bright side, she is excelling in school, and was well above average on her report card. We have a speech teacher helping her, since the negative pressure sounds like people are talking underwater, she needs help pronouncing certain kinds of words. For those of you that plan to have kids someday, take it from me: treat multiple ear infections as a very serious matter!

Wow SIX wisdom teeth?
When I had my first one pulled I was 19, it was really painful, left my mouth bleeding and drooling and stuffed with gauze for days.
Had the other three pulled at around age 27, and was fine a few hours later. Spit the gauze out, ate like normal.

I was lucky. It was my senior year of college and I was home for Thanksgiving. My mother asked, "did your wisdom teeth ever come in?" I counted them up and the total was 32. They came in and I never noticed.

I had the normal four plus two small baby-like ones on the top for some reason. First I was told it was five, and then it turned out to be six.
My mouth feels a little better today. I have the stitching in my mouth which feels weird. Also opening my mouth wide is kind of painful, so it's hard to eat solids. A lot better than yesterday though when there seemed to be blood everywhere and my mouth was full of gauze.

Tonight I dreamed I was a janitor at an American college who was writing novels and short stories on the side, and my wife (huh?) was secretly having the published under a different name and they were all huge bestsellers and she did not tell me and pocketed the money instead.
