Next weekend in Seattle id anyone is interested/local, Roq La Rue gallery is having an exhibition on comics called the "One Page Comic Show" featuring comics by fine artists. My favorite artist has a piece there. It aught to be pretty cool. I met her at an opening a few years back, they're pretty fun to go to, and Roq La Rue seems like a cool gallery, they've had a lot of exhibits I'd have liked to see in the past. Here's Audrey Kawasaki's contribution I hope Last Gasp collects it in hardcover, they do a ton of art books these days, and this seems like an easy frontrunner for an Eisner based on concept alone. Also, I'd just like to have a copy

I have a feature on my car that warns when "ice possible"...which - as I drive in -18 degrees Celsius weather surrounded by snowbanks taller than a grown man - is more amusing than useful.

Well, I've been MIA because of various family issues and a fairly big change in living arrangements. I was going to read The Incal for the graphic novel month, but as soon as I was about to start, things started happening. I think now that things have settled down for me I'll actually be able to participate in review threads and even start one of my own.

Listening to the radio at work last night and the repeated station promos for their new app proudly proclaiming you no longer need to Shazam songs to find out what they are made me wonder if the greater mass of people will wonder why DC named a super-hero after that app when the Dwayne Johnson Shazam movie is released....since it is the most common usage of the term in modern culture, followed second by the Gomer Pyle exclamation and a distant third is the actual comic property (if that exists at all in the minds of non-comic fans).

TV series in the '70s (most of whom probably had no idea there was a comic too). Cei-U! I summon Michael Gray and Jackson Bostwick!

I am the generation that watched it, and am now in the demographic Hollywood studios does not care about. That generation is a lot closer to the one that watched Gomer Pyle shout Shazam regularly than those who grew up with the app, and the show is rarly talked about even among tv nostagia circles where Isis gets mention, but not Shazam. Though I hold out hope for a Winnebego and the Dwayne Johnson film.... -M

I first heard Shazam from Gomer Pyle when I was a kid, but my dad told me it was a comic book. Then there was that miniseries in the 80's, I found the first issue in a quarter bin and bought it. Only issue I had ever read. I liked the idea of a kid with powers that turned him into an adult. And not too long after I stumbled upon this there was the Ultraverse ripoff Prime, which I bought a couple issues of but couldn't really get into.

I accept the fact that, within reason, my browser history is public record and can be used to sell me stuff. Content and services on the internet (like this website) have to be paid for somehow, so I applaud companies that try to do a better job of it rather than simply attempting more intrusive blunt methods. Remember a few years back when they had all those voice ads that would start talking to you, and you'd have to scan the page, find the ad, and x it out to make it stop? Infuriating. My old tripod pages are now so laden with pop-up ads that they're impossible to view these days. Also infuriating. So I don't mind this. And if I were to surf somewhere that I didn't want made public record (not that I generally do), I know what to do to make that browsing relatively invisible. It's more the icloud hack and things of that nature, where materials and info that were supposed to be private are suddenly turned public, that I get creeped out. I don't want to find pictures of my six year old at the pool being displayed on a pedophile website. Use Adblock it helps a lot man.

Use Adblock it helps a lot man. But, my point is that I don't mind the ads, and content and service providers on the web have to get paid somehow. If everyone blocked the ads, they'd just have to find some more obnoxious way. I think most sites I use do a classy job of handling their advertising these days. And, if proboards couldn't show us a few banners, we wouldn't have this amazing free community

I just learned that my youngest son, who was born in the US, is liable to be charged thousands of dollars by the US government for failing to file his taxes as a citizen living abroad.
I thought that as long as he doesn't have his American citizenship recognized by voting or asking for a passport, he'd simply be considered Canadian by any American official (he does have a Canadian passport), but according to the financial analysts who wrote about the subject in this morning's paper, that's not the case: the IRS has a long arm, and even if my kid doesn't have to pay taxes to the US, he still has to fill form #whatever to specify that he is not currently residing in the US.
I'm not overly worried since he's still a minor and hasn't had a paying job yet, but that might mean problems in the future... it seems that failure to fill form #whatever can be punished by a fine of several thousands bucks.
What he can also do is go to the US embassy and formerly renounce his US citizenship. Personally, I'd rather have him keep his options open and fill form #whatever as soon as he starts working, so that he can later have access to both the American and Canadian job markets. (And I admit it... It's pretty cool to have dual citizenship).
