Good lord. Did some super villain invent a negative vibes ray atop the Empire State Building to blast the intrepid members of the CCF forums?? Time for a super-team up! Sending good vibes, thoughts, prayers and well wishes to all who need it.

Thanks for checking in. Glad you and yours are all safe. So far news is saying 12 people have been hurt, but thankfully no fatalities. We get tornadoes here in Wisconsin too, so I can relate to how scary they can be. Nowhere near as many as where you are on the plains, but enough. I used to live in Florida too, so they have hurricanes. Ironically the only times I actually had to go through a hurricane were after I left the state. Once in Newport, RI, and once while at sea when I was in the Navy. It didn't help that the hurricane had my name, so all the people barfing were blaming me. I got to give you (well I do all those that are braver than me to serve in the military) props for floating on huge chunk of metal out in the middle of the ocean. Water, well not itself per say, but the fear of drowning is right up there with spiders. Add a hurricane to it? I'd be freaking out. I fish, when I do from the shore or from a distance that I know I can swim back to, if I get anywhere near water other than a pool. I hope everyone is doing better. This may sound New Agey or facile or whatever, but when I'm going through a rough patch I think of this FF panel (yay comics!) and it always helps put things into perspective for me.  The one comic I can think of that I've read for a laugh, when I've needed it was about Ben too. I've never cared for the writers that have used Ben as the brooding, sad monster, as his defining characteristic. But I do like of the older FF issues I have read of Ben and Alicia's relationship together. I've always liked the fun banter between him and Johnny. He lives in Berlin now but was in town to visit his daughter and we somehow almost always manage to run into each other on those occasions without even making plans. He gave me a consolatory hug, which is always extra nice coming from this guy:  He was wearing a sweater and no skis today, though, sadly. |

I appreciate the sentiment, but bravery didn't have a whole lot to do with. Many, many folks in the military were/are far braver than myself, because they are much more in harm's way than I ever was. People who have to worry about roadside bombs, suicide bombers, snipers, etc, are the ones who are truly brave.
As to the ship going through the hurricane, it was never in any real danger. The ship I was on was over 600 feet long (imagine two football fields) so it was reasonably stable through it. I was kind of an incredible sight while I was on pilot house watch in the middle of the night, though. The pilot house is where they steered the ship and had big windows looking out the front. My job was to receive updates from the CIC (Combat Information Center) which monitored the radar for any other ships, etc, in the area, and plot them on a board. Looking out the front window, as we went up a wave we'd see nothing but the stormy night sky, then going down the other side of the wave we'd see nothing but sea. It was actually kind of fun if you're not prone to sea sickness. For those who were, they puked their guts out. Great fun.

We were friends in middle school/junior high, but I kept running into him randomly in later life. I eventually had to unfriend the son of a bitch on Facebook for posting untagged spoilers...on PURPOSE! Some people... |
