A deer just wandered through our yard. Lovely and majestic, right? No. It was gravely wounded, gut-shot, presumably by some maladroit local hunter. Day ruined. Wow. That's ridiculously upsetting. So very sorry your family had to experience that.

How delightful! Though I'm in the sticks, my sub-division has such a dismaying level of noise-pollution, be it Harley revving, leaf blowing, kids shrieking, or family fist-fights that spill out into the street (not kidding) that wildlife sightings beyond the ubiquitous flattened possum are vanishingly rare. You're very fortunate to have such elegant (and uninjured) neighbors. Outside of zoos I've seen 99% of the wildlife I've witnessed here. There was much wildlife, well animal wildlife in St. Louis. The two most memorable, one terrifying; tarantulas migrating across the highway (I even screamed inside the truck) and the other awesome; a real life cougar just yards from outside my truck as I was driving down dirt roads to a drilling rig. I used to love driving up to well sites in northern Pennsylvania and seeing wildlife along the way. Outside of the normal things (deer, rabbits, raccoons, possums, squirrels), my two favorite sights were a herd of elk one time (about a dozen or so of them) and porcupines on a regular basis, as well as a very ill-tempered muskrat at one of our fresh water ponds.

I have a ton of things to be thankful for, being one of the most spoiled and undeserving people in this land. This forum certainly makes the list. My best to every member here!

Here is a classic movie clip: It's a day to be Thankful for the blessings in your life. Everyday is Thanksgiving day for me. As a young Jehovahs Witness I didn't have any holidays. The meaning of a day is what you make of it to me. I've never gotten the emphasis of specific days, even ones that celebrate things that are real to me, like my wife and I's anniversary. Even after 20 plus years of no longer practicing said religion. Particularly since the holiday drama has already started and we haven't even left our house yet. (Hopefully my father in law makes his spicy bloody marys. I think I'm gonna need a few,.) I am also thankful for this place. The old place is getting to be a madhouse. So I'm glad I don't have to go there to visit y'all. Have safe trips if you are traveling.

For having cross state delivery jobs for the last 16 years I've only hit one deer and one turkey. The deer died. The turkey didn't so I had finish it. I hated it but would have felt worse letting it suffer. On the other hand they both taste so delicious. But I've never been able to bring myself to hunt. Thankfully my father in law does. Hoping to get some venison tomorrow when we travel there for the holidays. I'm not a hunter either, being ludicrously over-sensitive regarding animals since I was a small child. Even if I had wanted to dispatch the deer, the few weapons I have would be insufficient to do the job humanely. Not to mention that I live in a sub-division peopled by quite a few little kids. Opening fire, even with the best of intentions, would be reckless and, hopefully, criminal. I did hunt when I was younger. my father grew up on a farm, in southern Illinois, during the Depression. They hunted for food, to supplement what they grew. It was a family activity and I wanted to join in. I got a shotgun for my 14th birthday; and, after going through my hunter's safety course, got to go out with everyone. I even got my first rabbit, standing too close, and pretty much destroyed it. That didn't sit well. Not too long down the road and my dad wounded one. He picked it up and it started squealing and thrashing. He bashed its head against a tree to finish it off. My father was a gentle and thoughtful man and loved animals; he was just killing the animal quickly and efficiently, rather than letting it bleed to death. Still, that was it, for me. I packed away my shotgun and never touched it again. I have no problem with hunting, apart from killing for the sake of trophies. We ate what we killed and only killed enough for a meal or two. Even that wasn't all that much fun, as nothing ruins your dinner like having to spit out a pellet.

We grew up hunting but no one does any more.
Thank you all for being an important part of my virtual family. I truly am grateful for the CCF.
Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels for you all.

Happy Land-Theft-and-Eventual-Conquest-By-White-European-Christians-Day!!!! Or, Happy Thanksgiving to those who do not prefer the historical version. Here is a classic movie clip: I don't do holidays; especially this one, as I am a shallow, self-absorbed vegetarian. Plus, I come from a long line of petty, useless drunks anyways, so the worst thing we could do is congregate. I do like to keep "busy" on my days off though... {Spoiler: Click to show} I have a prescription....I totally forgot to bring wine today.

This is sort of a comic book post but also sort of a personal post, and I wasn't sure where to put it, so it wound up here.
I think I may have lost my interest in comic books.
I pick up my weekly books from the LCS (a list that has dropped down to just a handful of titles per month), bring them home, and let them sit on my comic book cabinets for days on end without ever being touched, until I eventually get around to them. Most of this is due to the repeated series launches, followed by some event that reboots the universe, followed by another new series launch, followed by... Yes, I know it makes me sound like a cranky old man, but there was something comforting when I was growing up about seeing a series with an issue number in the high 100's or 200's or 300's.
Also, there were constants, like Tony Stark was Iron Man, and if he couldn't wear the armor, his best friend Jim Rhodes filled the suit, but now Tony Stark is nowhere to be seen and Rhodey is dead, and there are two Iron Men running around, one being a teenage girl and the other being Victor von Doom. I certainly understand Marvel wanting to do something different and expanding their audience through that, but neither of those options appeals to me in the least, so I am feeling as though Marvel is forgetting its core audience to chase a new audience that it very likely won't actually capture.
Also, today, on Black Friday, most of the LCS in my area are having sales with deep discounts on back issues, TPBs, Omnibuses, Masterworks, etc., and whereas in years past I would have been up at the crack of dawn to hit as many of them as I could, there was no desire to do so today, even though I have money set aside for my hobbies and could have done so easily. I didn't want to drive to any of them and pick through boxes and bins, hunting for little gems or bigger-ticket items to fill in holes in certain runs I've been working on for years. Admittedly, I did just pick up 4 issues of Amazing Spider-Man in the 140's a couple of weeks ago from Half-Price Books while they were running their annual autumn week of coupons event, but I don't know if I took any joy from buying them or if they were just perfunctory purchases because I had the coupons and available money and the books were there to be bought.
Part of this may be some residual depression from my long stint of unemployment earlier this year, part of it may be that I am busy with my new job, my wife and my daughters and our lives and activities, our church, and other interests (like Magic: The Gathering), and part of it may be that I've just outgrown it. Anyway, I'm not sure what this ennui means, if anything, but I'm just not feeling it right now.
