Scout: Mount Fire
President Jerry Grail is dead, as is Ray Vaughn. Rosana Winter has become bodyguard to Vice President Laura Carver and is working to get her back on her feet and make a difference. Rev. CW Deluxe us dead, after the torture of his mentally handicapped aid, Doody. Scout is even more wanted, now. The Four Monsters are slain.
Issue 8 finds Scout and the Gahn in the hills, hiding out and hunting. They are soon stalked by a couple of monsters. New President Laura Carver and Bill Loper meet with Israeli envoy Avner Glanzman, who offers Israel's aid to the floundering US. Loper rejects it, but Glanzman says the offer stands and appears to have a connection to Carver. A robed and hooded man is seen wandering the desrt, bandages over his eyes. He holds books and wears a sign that says "follow." he speaks to some people, though we don't hear (or see) what he says. The people follow him. Scout climbs a rock face and comes fac to face with The Clown and Godeh, two legends of the Apache, used to scare children. They are frightening figures and the Godeh speaks of Scout's evil deeds as a child, while the Clown giggles. Scout unloads his weapons into them. The Gahn says they are manifestations of Santanna's fears. he meets another monster, who transforms into Santana. he disapepars and the Gahn tells Scout that he brought him hear to teach him, to learn to tame the beast inside, which will be far harder than fighting the Four Monsters. The Gahn departs. Scout encounters the hooded man and shares food and water. The man lowers his hood and reveals that he is Doody, who is preaching a combination of the Gospels and the Lord of the Rings. Gandalf is as much a holy figure as Jesus. he departs to lead his people and Scout sees a vast crowd waiting for Doody.
There is more comedy with the sarcastic conversations with the HGahn, some interesting developments with Avner Glanzman and some scary s#$% with The Clown and the Godeh. The early scene of Doody preaching to people and their sudden following of him makes you take notice. You wonder who the man is. Later, when Doody lowers his hood and Scout recognizes him, he asks about Missy and Guitar Man (6 months have passed since issue 6). Doody says they healed him and he began wandering and preaching. he sounds like he is disturbed; but, Scout rethinks things when he sees the crowds. There is more than just a simple and mentally handicapped young man spouting scripture and Tolkien. Doody has power. Lots of intrigue to build upon.
Issue 9 introduces the second best character in the series (after Scout): Beau La Duke! Scout comes across some bikers who have killed a cow and are about to cut meet. Scout is hungry and tries to calm the bikers but they recognize him and attack. Scout kills them and is about to help himself when Beau gets the drop on him. The pair square off and shoot, but we see they were both shooting other targets in the distance; more bikers. They share the meat, as a biker woman watches via binoculars. Laura Carver spars with Bill Loper, who pushes her to carry on Jerry Grail's "New America" platform of military build-up. Laura wants to focus on hunger and the depleted resources but bows to Loper. She shares confidences with Rosa, showing us that she is masquerading as still being under the sway of the heroin. She tasks Rosa with helping her get evidence that Bill Loper is diverting funds for something sinister. Along the way, they meet Avner Glanzman and tell him Carver is interested in his proposals. Beau shows Scout around new Dunbar, his town. La Duke runs everything, including the only radio station, WLDQ, which plays all Blues music (naturally). He fills Scout in about the bikers, who haven't been a threat and wonders what is up. he takes Scout to his bunker home, surrounded by computer-controlled minefields and a gun turret with a howitzer. We see Doody preaching to a crowd and one of the listeners reports in to Bill Loper, via communicator. Loper tells him to proceed with Project Mount Fire. Helicopters show up around the La Duke compound, from the Salvation Army wing of the National Guard Defense Reserve. They want to talk with Beau. they agree to a meeting. There, they demand all of La Duke's cattle, with no money offered. La Duke is irate and then is shown the meeting's dinner, the head of his dog Chuvalo. La Duke starts firing and expects to die, but Scout is there, creating havoc, to get him out. The head off and meet up with the biker who were poaching cattle. meanwhile, Rosa breaks into Bill Loper's office and uncovers the details of Project Mount Fire. She is surprised by Avner Glanzman, who reveals he is with the MOSSAD.
Beau La Duke is based on fan-turned-pro Stephen Scott Beau Smith, who was a regular letter contributor to Eclipse who ended up as their sales manager and occasional writer. he would later write extra cartoons for Scout, "Beau La Duke's Tips for Real Men." They were always a hoot and Truman captures and exaggerates Smith's personality, making La Duke one of the most fun characters in the series. He (the character) is a lovable Blues-lovin', redneck hillbilly, with a heart of gold, and a Franchi SPAS 12 shotgun. We se that Loper is trying to manipulate Doody into something big, something the Israelis are interested in; but, we don't know what, yet. Lot's of intrigue. Truman continues his mix of western vistas and gun-blasting action, with sarcastic humor as the icing on the cake.
Issue 10 starts out with beau making a deal with the bikers: 15 head of cattle and a breeding bull, plus 3 Mantovani cuts a day on WLDQ! It seems the bikers like Mantovani. Rosa and Avner brief Laura Carver. Bill Loper has agents among Doody's cult to stir up trouble, using them as an excuse to demonstrate the vulnerability of the country, so Loper can press the New America agenda. Doody is seen talking to the agents, who have told him that Mount Fire has the supplies they need to feed and cloth the 5,000 followers. Doody says to lead the people there. The Salvation Army attacks the La Duke compound and seem to be stopped, until gunships appear. Scout leaves the group behind, he has better things to do. La Duke leads everyone inside the bunker. Laura Carver dispatches Rosa to find Scout to try and stop the cult, so that Carver has plausible denial, if things go TU. Scout takes out an SA vehicle and discovers something. beau and the bikers are battling but things are futile. They surrender after the cows are hit. Scout shows up and saves them, revealing that the SA have found something like coal or uranium and want the land. Scout knows that La Duke can keep things in court for years, messing up the SA's plans. He brokers a deal to give them 12 cattle, plus the 15 to the bikers (th Beau's consternation). They depart and Beau destroys the bunker, as they prepare to move on. We end with Doody and his people arriving at a NORAD facility, Mount Fire.
Now we are getting answers, as Truman reveals Loper's purpose and why the SA are after Beau. We see what Mount Fire is. NORAD means nukes. This won't end well. Rosa must reunite with Scout. Great battle scenes, more fun with Beau La Duke, more intrigue with Rosa and Laura Carver.
Issue 11 opens in Las Vegas, as Mr Show Dog is interrupted in his video game with news that the band hasn't shown. He sends on the Satan Boys in their place. A winnebago pulls up with the New Disciples of Soul, featuring Guitar Man and Missy. After a few words (and knuckles) with the Satan Boys (who look distinctly like KISS), the band takes the stage. The agent provocateurs in Doody's group infiltrate Mount Fire, in Army uniforms. The base is under strength after military cutbacks. It still had 10 missiles, 3 armed with nuclear warheads. Loper reports into someone that the project's first step is complete. Scout is being tracked by the Army but uses superior guerilla tactics against them. They fire Israeli concussion rockets at him. Doody gets a report from the subversives that the base is theirs. he thanks them and then they are seized by others of the flock. Doody knows the truth about them. He unveils his blind eyes. Scout takes out the soldiers and comes face to face with a weaponized battle-mech, Big Moishe! Rosa emerges from the hatch and offers Scout a deal.
More action, more intrigue. Doody is more than he seems and Loper's agents are undone. Loper has outside masters. Rosa has a walking tank, as Truman adds some Japanese tech to the fun, as Scout goes Gundam!
The issue also features a new back-up, Monday, the Eliminator. Someone, in a scene reminiscent of Commando, is killing former members of a squad, from the Vietnam War. Only one is alive and he is visited by his former CO, Monday, who dresses like the Terminator, in tiger-striped spandex (well, looks more like spandex than cammies). This series will build, until Scout meets Monday.
Issue 12 sees Rosa make her offer of a pardon, if Scout kills the holy man who has taken Mount Fire. Scout escapes and Rosa tells Avner that they go to Plan B. Doody and his people have the missiles and chant about becoming fire. Show Dog signs the New Disciples of Soul to a contract. Rosa and her men create a perimeter around Mt Fire, keeping the press out. Bill Loper calls to order her to let the press in. She defies him and says she answers to Laura Carver. An attack comes from the base and is put down. one of the CIA agents is badly wounded and is spouting apocalyptic gibberish. Scout infiltrates the base. Big Moishe moves in for a direct assault and Doody concentrates. the electrical systems in Big Moishe short out. Rosa and Avner are taken prisoner. Scout rescues them, but the group is surrounded by Doody and his people.
Doody has paranormal powers, allowing him to brainwash the agents and short out the electrical systems in Big Moishe. Scout is there to try and stop Doody and keep him alive. Rosa is trying to stop Bill Loper's agenda. Will their agendas be at odds? More great suspense.
Issue 13 sees Doody confront Scout and inform Roas and Avner. He tells Rosa he has had visions of her ruling in shadow and carrying the flag. he tells Avner of visions of Israel, of the Wailing Wall and speaks of Masada. Scout tells Rosa the story of Masada, a fortress where the Sicarii (an offshoot of the Zealots) held out until they committed mass suicide, rather than be taken by the Romans. We see the missiles. Laura Carver confronts Loper, but has no proof. he crows about the unrest. he tempts Laura with pills. She is weak without Rosa. Savage Henry isn't happy about Show Dog's new band interrupting his trade in vice, by pulling people in to listen to music, instead. Rosa, Avner and Scout are sequestered. they find the third agent, but he is no help. Doody comes to them and starts to affect Rosa. Scout stops him and is beaten unconscious. Rosa and Avner fight and escape, leaving Scout behind. Doody speaks to Scout but is attacked by Loper's agent, who holds a knife on him, ready to cut his throat. Rosa opens the base gates to give the Army an entry point and they attack. Doody explodes the agent's head, leaving him dead and vowing that no others will die. The Army seizes a beachhead and moves in. Doody destroys them all by himself. Scout sees the bodies, but is hit by an arrow, fired by a cultist. Doody cries out in anguish.
Man this gets bad quickly. Doody is a mix of Carrie and Firestarter, as his mental powers are beyond knowledge. Something happened during his torture. He wants to protect his people but events are overtaking him.
Monday continues battling assassins and meets the man who sent them. he beats the truth out of him; the Legion of Man is behind it. keep that name in mind. It factors in the next storyline in Scout.
Issue 14 is the climax. The story is told via a debriefing of Rosa, after the events. Doody calls on her to help him save Scout. he draws energy from him and starts Scout healing. he tells her that she will one day kill Scout. Rosa meets up with her soldiers and sets a medic to helping Scout as they move on. Laura Carver dreams of Rosa, whom she loves. Scout awakes and chokes out the medic. The Army battles Doody's people. Scout tries to save him, but he fights free. Doody climbs the gantry and launches the missile from inside, and it detonates in space. The siege is over and the cultists are taken prisoner, including Scout. A group called the Swords of Texas, gunrunners, looks on. more on them in the future.
This was a fantastic storyline. The first book dealt in mythology, ecology, and apocalyptic action. The style continues as a charismatic evangelist is added, leading events to a near nuclear situation. These were hot topics in the 80s. Scout is very much of its time; but it is an intriguing drama. Truman's storytelling and character detail are really on display in this volume. Truman also knows how to do pulp and Scout revels in it. Monday, the Eliminator is also filled with it, in the men's adventure style. It's far less effective and wallows in action movie cliches. However, the legion of Man is a secret conspiracy that factors in the next volume and the spin-off titles, The Swords of Texas and New America. This will lead into Scout: War Shaman, after the initial series. Truman is mixing more apocalyptic religious iconography and that will grow as things develop. It is only the fact that Scout was published by a small company that fought for rack space that the series isn't better known. Had it come from DC or Marvel, it would have been in reprints that were kept in circulation and mass marketed to the action-adventure crowd, as well as those in search of something deeper. The series solidified Truman as a hot artist, though Hawkworld made him a star. That led to things like working with the Grateful Dead, as well as book cover illustration and other art duties. By the end of the 90s, he was mostly working as a writer, as an indifferent market mostly missed his excellent DC pulp adventure, Guns of the Dragon.
I mentioned the Monday back-up feature; but didn't mention the previous Fashion In Action strip. it was conceived an executed by John K Snyder III, featuring the adventures of a spy, with the fashion industry wrapped around it. It was comical fun, though more of the dark comedy variety than stuff like The Tick or Lethargic Lad. There were plenty of guns blazing. The series got two specials, but that was it. Snyder earned a small rep here, though Grendel would give him a bigger one. However, his work was sporadic and even his Dr Midnite mini-series took forever to come out (I first heard about it in 1991; it was published in 1999).
President Jerry Grail is dead, as is Ray Vaughn. Rosana Winter has become bodyguard to Vice President Laura Carver and is working to get her back on her feet and make a difference. Rev.
