Marvel's Conan the barbarian: Exodus and other tales which I understand reprints most of the recent King-Size Conan.
I bought it because of Roy Thomas's presence, but felt disappointed when I received the book... by Crom, that's a lot of money for so few pages (and such a flimsy-looking binding, too... Dark Horse's collections looked much sturdier and felt like they could endure multiple readings with ease. This has the feel of a floppy comic, at the price of a TPB.)
A cursory look shows that the artwork and colours are nice, though, so who knows. I'm especially intrigued by the Kevin Eastman contribution.

Die volume 3, Department of Truth volume 1 and Blackwoord volume 2, all part of the big backlog pickup I did a week or two ago, but by now I've also read all 3 and I like them all for various reasons.

I've picked up a few modern back issues over the past few months, mostly along with others that qualify as classic comics, they got lumped in with those books in the classics purchased thread, but I got a trio of modern books in the mail today with no classics involved, so I'm posting them here. First is the first issue of the 2016 Scarlet Witch series by James Robinson, that featured some gorgeous David Aja covers, including the one for #1... Staying on the Wanda train, I hadn't been aware of the Alex Ross Timeless variants when they were coming out at the end of last year. My wife is a huge Alex Ross fan, so when I saw these, I wanted to pick up some of them for her and I, mostly those featuring some of our favorite characters rather than the whole set. So many of these are getting slabbed and sold for ridiculous prices, and I don't really want to pay more than cover for these, so I've been keeping an eye out for them at the price I want to pay, and passing if they are more than that. The seller I got SW #1 form had two that I managed to get at auction at cover price or less and with combined shipping with the SW issue, it worked out to a price I was ok with. One was the cover featuring Wanda (Strange Academy #4 I believe) and the other featured Black Widow I would have bought these if they were issues as prints instead of variant covers, but they haven't been, so I am picking up the variants as I find them at the right price (i.e. cover price or what I would pay for a print of that size). These are the only two I have so far, and we'll play it by ear if I get any more. -M

Green Arrow: 80 Years of the Emerald Archer HC
DC's newest 80 year Deluxe HC. So far I like how DC has put these collections together (I hope Marvel does something similar for their upcoming 60 year titles). I do have one problem with this collection - its skews heavily towards modern stories. I get that Green Arrow didn't have his own series until 40 years ago and his first 40 years were mostly back up stories or team ups. But they missed out on some Jack Kirby Green Arrow stories that IMO deserved a place in a collection like this.
Still to come the Wonder Woman and Aquaman collections in the next several months. Still disappointed DC didn't do a Hawkman or Shazam! collection.

Picked up a couple of things while at Half Price Books. While not classics, they all have a classic connection, either a classic creators or characters involved... First up the Eisner Companion... second, Trina Robbins bio-comic about one of the early female comic artists, Lily Renee: and finally, copy of Shadow Hero, a book I read from the library when it came out and I intended to pick up, but never got around to it. I didn't realize when I bought it, but saw that it was signed and sketched in by (I think) Liew on the title page... -M

Got the 3rd and final volume of Invisible Kingdom... good ending, but seemed a bit rushed. I feel like this could have used another trade worth to let Father Echo and his group have more time, and make Tess' journey a bit more authentic. Very good overall, though.

I didn't realize it had come out. I need to pick that up. I think the 3rd was actually an OGN because they didn't release the final arc as individual issues. -M

Yeah, it was. Came out this Wednesday! I definitely feel like there were some delays.
I also read the 1st trad of the most recent XO Manowar series by Dennis Hopeless... pretty good stuff. He's got an Elon Musk-type character that may or may not be evil that's trying to 'handle' him, which is fun. No idea if this relates to the last couple series, or if it's a straight reboot (seems like the latter) but I'll definitely be adding it to my pull when it the 2nd arc begins in June.

Just backed Jeff Smith's Kickstarter for Tuki, and will be getting the trade collections of Vol. 1 Fight for Fire and Vol. 2 Fight for Family. There are 2 days left in the campaign, and it is fully funded. Vol. 1 is set to ship in July, and Vol. 2 in October. -M

Read These Savage Shores from Vault Comics written by Ram V, with art by Sumit Kumar, colors by Vittorio Astone and letters by Aditya Bidikar. Set mostly in southern India during the Anglo-Mysore wars it also includes a Raaksha and, somewhat unfortunately, vampires. I wasn't familiar with any of the creators, but the setting is what sold me on the book. There just isn't a lot of American comics set in India, much less in the mid 1700s. I mention the colorist and the letterer because the art is, for me, the star of the show. Lush, with great coloring and some nice lettering effects. The story itself is fine. Probably better than average. I'd just much rather have had more Indian mythological creatures than having vampires shoe-horned in. Still it's a nice read with great art and a fun and different setting. I'd recommend it if you're looking for something different.
