I despise Superman after the early Golden Age. Silver and Bronze Age Superman are among my least favorite comics. Not even Alan Moore could make him interesting. Sic 'em Krypto, sic 'em

I'm currently reading Superman Chronicles, Volume 2, and yeah, I can see why this was such a sensation in 1938 and 1939. These stories are actually very compelling and fun and out-of-control. I love Shuster's art, and Siegel just seemed to write from a "Who am I mad at today? - Gamblers!" mind-set. (And the villain (when it's not a drunken driver) is always Ultra. (I think I'm almost up to the story where Ultra transfers his mind into the body of a Hollywood actress.)) It's too bad that Grant Morrison didn't really go back to basics when he was allegedly going back to basics in his Action Comics run. I would much rather read the Siegel/Shuster Superman than the Morrison Superman, where he's merely pretending to write the Siegel/Shuster Superman. (I liked Morrison's Action run. It was OK. But it wasn't anywhere near as good as the real thing.) Yeah, I'd have to agree a bit there (though the Multiversity sorta backdoor-pilot in #9 was pretty sweet). It wasn't a poor run by any stretch, but it ultimately became something we'd sorta seen before.

the most blaise right hand gesture possible. he looks like the fonz's older more world weary brother who wouldn't be seen dead talking to the cunninghams let alone living in their annex. yeah he's had a lot of girls, maybe that fire at the repair shop was his fault, there might be some unpaid gambling debts too... wanna fight about it

Check out "The Son of Bizarro" for one of the best stories of the era.

The Silver Age Superman was the best. The Golden age version didn't have any personality. Not true. Just because his personality was the model for most of the Golden Age heroes doesn't mean he didn't have a personality. He was basically a slightly hareder-edged Spider-man. I like both the SA and Bronze Age Supes fine in small doses. But it will always feel like a watered-down version of the "real" GA Supes to me.

The difficulty withSuperman is that he was, basically, the "baseline" superhero, at least through the early Bronze Age. Also, once DC realized what a cash cow he was becoming, they weren't going to do anything that could remotely piss off parents.
