Marvel Fanfare #1-60This series shouldn't be too much of a hard sell if you are a Marvel fan. Fun, eclectic stories by some of the best artists and writers at the time, full to the brim with bonuses, pin-ups, portfolios and pull-out covers all by Marvel's top talent. There is an interesting backstory to Fanfare's stories, many that were meant for other titles but were knicked or the plot changed at the last minute. Some of the standout stories include Iron Man vs. The Octopus in "Night of the Octopus", "A Terrible Thing to Waste..." a full-page spread Hulk story by John Byrne, "...Perchance to Dream" a fantastic Dr. Strange story by Simonson and Gibbons, "Shadows of the Soul" a "lost" X-Men story by Claremont, the original Silver Surfer #1 (2nd Series) story that was shelved (but still excellent), and so much more. The big knock on this series back then was that they were pricey at $1.25 to $1.50 an issue. Now they make perfect bargain bin fodder, and are so much fun to collect.

Legion of Super-Heroes, the Levitz and Giffen years, so something like 285 -319 and Baxter 1 -60. The lead in to the Great Darkness Saga, just all round amazeballs, to the natural stopping point of 5 years later.
Levitz holds it all together with some excellent world building, great characterization, and fantastic stories, while working with some good (LaRocque) and great(Giffen and Lightle) artists.

Agree, but I seem to remember LaRoque being pretty weak at drawing faces, at least early in his run.

Agree, but I seem to remember LaRoque being pretty weak at drawing faces, at least early in his run. I spelt his name wrong too...I thought he was fairly reasonable on Legion mate. If it had been the stiff work, as in the Hawkeye stuff he did(IIRC), he started with it would have been a different story. Then there is also the fact that following the amazing Steve Lightle he was always going to suffer in comparison. I think the inker (Mike DeCarlo ) saved his ass here as well, though I usually loathe his work. For a guy with a fairly light line,he overshadowed many pencillers, making them all look amateur. Im thinking Barry Kitson on LEGION, and George Perez on some Titans stuff (wholely out of thin air, hope none of youse is going to prove me a liar ).

If it's alright, may I nominate this run then? The merits speak for themselves. Lee/Kirby's part is among the strongest of Marvel's Silver Age. Conway and Buscema expanded on the grandeur of the cosmic areas of the MU while Thomas incorporated some of the more traditional elements of Norse myths. Simonson- 'Nuff Said. Defalco and Frenz recaptured some of the early spirit of Lee/Kirby in their tales. And that's not even covering the smaller creative teams in-between such as Zelentz and Moench. A worthy run indeed. String, By the bristling beard of Odin, Thor of Asgard calls you friend ! Well met and well said brother! Come, bring out the mead for tonight we sing of glories past and of battles yet to come! For Asgard!!!!
