Confessor mentioned boxed sets a little while back and it stuck with me. So the last two days I’ve been listening to the Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-74 box. I love the convenience and ease of finding stuff that steaming gives, but those big boxed sets were amazing. I still think a top 10 favourite/best retrospective box sets thread might be fun. We'd obviously have to set rules on what constitutes a retrospective box set -- minumum of three discs maybe?? Covering a period of at least 2 years in the artist/band/record lable/genre's existence??? Can it be a vinyl or CD box set or are we just focusing on CD?? Maybe it has to have been issued at least 10 years after the period of time it covers??? Would we exclude classical music??? I dunno, but once we get what constitutes a retrospective box set ironed out, I think such a run down could be a lot fun. Okay. I'm working on this and it ain't easy. I'm trying to keep it from being overwhelmed by Miles Davis boxes. And I think I may have to do them in alphabetical order (except for #1), because ranking is just too hard. And I'm not sure how to deal with the fact that I want to put seven different Chess Boxes on here.

I not sure I have ten box sets - though I like all the ones I do have so if it turns out there are ten I suppose I could just list those.

When do we want to go? Confessor , I see that supercat disappeared again.

And I'm not sure how to deal with the fact that I want to put seven different Chess Boxes on here. I kinda wonder if I should go with alphabetical order too, since I kinda find it hard to evaluate whole box sets as well -- unless there's a really glaring problem with them (such as perceived or real bias in the song selection or inferior versions of some key tracks being chosen etc). I've also decided that I'm not going to choose the 2x CD box set that we were almost certainly both talking about earlier, Slam. I've decided that because a) I know that you'll choose it anyway and it'll be nice to have more variety in these lists, and b) because I'm a stubborn Brit and in my corner of the world this was just a double CD compilation, not a box set. And I'm set (I think). When do we want to go? Confessor , I see that supercat disappeared again. Oh Lordy, I haven't even begun to draw up a shortlist yet! Can you wait til Monday next week before we start? I mean, I could probably be ready by Friday, but then we have the weekend straight after that, so I'm thinking it might be better to kick off on a Monday. What do you think?

I see that supercat disappeared again. Oh yeah... so he has. That's a shame. I was looking forward to seeing his box set picks. I hope he didn't get the hump about my proposing a "popular music only" rule for our run down because, as I said, I was more than happy for him to pick classical sets, of he wanted to. It was only a suggestion when we were trying to establish rules anyway! BTW, I assume we are ordering out Top 10 lists by alphabetical order of the box set title, rather than the artist, right? I have both single artists and various artists sets in my short list, so I figure going by title is the most sensible way to go. Thoughts?

But that’s me. I say do what feels good.

I just deleted a number of posts in this thread because they contained borderline rule breaking content. If you are feeling upset about somebody else's comments in the forum and feel that they constitute an attack on you, then please follow the suggestions linked to below and report the offending post to the moderators. Do not start attacking fellow members in a completely unrelated thread like this one. Personal attacks in The Music thread? I must have missed all that. I thought this and the books, tv, and movie threads were relatively free of the personal anger and back-biting that pops up in some of the comics threads on certain topics.

That's only because you haven't posted that the DeFranco Family is your all-time #1 music group.
Try something like that, and you'll surely be worthy of slings and arrows hurled your way.
That's a joke, by the way. leaving no room for guessing here.
Enjoy whatever music you choose. I'll be proud to say right here and now that Roger Whittaker is a guilty pleasure of mine, and I don't care what others think about that.

I like Roger Whittaker too, though I can easily understand how his voice might come across as a little too rich , almost syrupy for some listeners. "I'm Going to Leave Old Durham Town" always springs to mind when his name comes up.
And I love that DeFrancos song. I think it's a little bubblegum gem that can stand up with the best of the Jackson Five and I like it way better than most of the Osmond Family's hits (to compare them to a couple other, more famous family-based singing groups with kid lead singers from the same era). And doesn't it have some weirdly-placed key changes? Not from one verse to another, as in most pop songs, but in the middle of a verse, or in the transition from verse to chorus. I'm not enough of a musician to pin it down, but that's how it sounds to me.
But mainly, it just sounds great. I have a taste for a lot of that late-60s-early-70s bubblegum stuff. Great, catchy melodies and so much positive energy - though again, I can see how it might feel cloying or over-treacly to some ears. Of course, I grew up hearing a lot of it on the radio at an impressionable age, so there's that nostalgia factor as well.

That brought me back to Lucien Francoeur throwing the supreme insult "JAZZ LOVER!!!" in Dans le Ventre du Dragon!Good times.

Ok tartanphantom (and anyone else interested), my turn to post some toys. Some of these are newer, some I've had for a bit and are just favorites I felt like posting. Not the whole collection here, but these get a fair amount of play time. Let's start with my nylon string acoustics. These are my favorites, I started on a nylon string model as a kid and I still love them, that softer but elegant sound just hits me the right way. The first one below is a Contreras model (or more accurately, a Manual Contreras II), and these came on my radar due to Strunz & Farah who included these among the models they play. This is a cedar topped full scale model, very nice resonance and kicked a nice Ramirez classical I had to the curb. But as it sometimes goes in the instrument world, the one that gets the most play time is a more modest proposition, and below is my true #1 that gets more play time than any other guitar I own. It's an inexpensive 3/4 scale Cordoba I purchased for my son when he was young, and he didn't end up gravitating towards the guitar, but I kept it anyways. It's just insanely good for the price, and the 3/4 scale is super comfy for stuff like faster scale runs. Next up is another "tale of two scales" with big sister/little sister Fender basses. While I'm a guitar player first and foremost, bass is a huge second love, especially for funk. This is my full scale Jazz in a buttercream finish, and sounds particularly great for slap technique: But much as I love it, in truth my hands are getting older and I thought I'd give a shorter scale model a try that might be a little less work getting around on. Below is my 30" scale Mustang and it is a delight to play. It has a "PJ" pickup configuration with a Precision pickup in the neck and a Jazz pickup in the bridge. I find the sweet spot to be the middle position, and while this bass can slap just fine, I particularly like it for finger picked method (it loves Jaco style runs). My bigger Jazz bass does seem to favor the auto-wah though. Since this is my smaller buttercream finish model, I call it "Butter Pat". I'll save my electric guitars for the next post, but I'll wrap this up with a Deering Goodtime banjo. During the pandemic with being home more, I decided to finally give the banjo a go, something I had wanted to do for a long time. This is their very simple entry model, but built in the USA and great value for the money. No resonator which is what I wanted since I just play at home and don't need the extra volume. I'm no Earl Scruggs or Doug Dillard, but I sure do enjoy trying! EDIT: No love for the electrics it seems, c'est la vie! We'll leave it here.

The very "nerve" of people who lower themselves to listening to jazz. Thanks for the morning chuckle.
