Most listened to songs of 2020 # 4 - Thunderstorms and Neon Signs - Wayne HancockI love Wayne the Train. The guy has been neo honky-tonk/neo-western swing for over twenty-five years and in a just world he'd be a star instead of working in relative anonymity. This was the title cut off his first album and is almost uncertainly his biggest song. This would have fit right in in 1955 and Wayne would have vied with Lefty Frizzell for who took the mantle from Hank Williams. One of my bands has shared gig billings with Wayne a couple of times around Nashville over the years.
He's an interesting character to say the least. This song is probably my all-time favorite of his original tunes.

My Favorite Bands #11-15. 11. Foreigner. Along with Boston & the Cars I feel like I "discovered" this band back in the 70's. Me & millions of other listeners!. From Feels Like The First Time to Jukebox Hero and their monster hit I Want To Know What Love Is they were part of the soundtrack of my high school & college years. I loved Lou Gramm's vocals both in the band & his solo efforts. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert several times. 12. The A's. A band that no one probably heard of, unless you grew up in Philly in the late 70's. They were part of the local Philadelphia scene from 1978-1982. After Last Night was the hit off their debut album and A Woman's Got the Power from their second album with the same name as the song. They were known for their live shows in the Philly area. They were similar to the Cars in their sound. 13. Yes. I was not a fan UNTIL my best friend took me to see them in concert. WOW! they were in the round at the old Philly Spectrum arena in the late 70's. They sounded so great. Like an entire orchestra with complex arrangements. I immediately went out and bought their albums. Unfortunately they went for a more mainstream commercial sound in the mid 80's and lost something IMO. 14. Theocracy. Modern prog metal with intense lyrics (with a Christian worldview) and insanely long songs. Their one song is 22 mins long! I hope to see them in concert someday. 15. Queen. What can you say. They did so many great songs in different genres. I felt like they kept re-inventing themselves. Iconic classic music. Freddie Mercury - what a frontman! I had a friend back in CT who was a huge Yes fan and turned me on to them. We ended up seeing them somewhere between 10-15 times with various line-ups between '96 and when I moved to Ohio in '03. We also went to a Steve Howe solo show in a little club in New Haven where we were at a table about 5 feet form where Steve was set up playing. Of course the same friend was also big into King Crimson and turned me on to them and we ending up seeing Crim or one of its ProjeKCts or members playing solo (Fripp at the House of Blues in Boston, Tony Levin, etc.) upwards of 30 times in the same time frame. I think at one point we did 7 shows in 10 days having gotten ticket sot every show in CT, MA and RI on that leg of the tour. Of course I haven't been to a live show since I moved out here, so I think I sued up my quota during that time. -M

I've loved Yes since I first heard the song "Roundabout" on the radio as a preteen back in the late 1970s. I got into King Crimson later, in my early 20s, but I now love pretty much anything done by Robert Fripp (also worth checking out are the recent videos done with his wife, singer and actress Toyah Wilcox - just do a YouTube search for Agony Aunts or Sunday Lockdown Lunch; it's very entertaining stuff). I've never seen either live, though, which I regret - although in the case of Yes, I think the best concerts would have been back in the 1970s (I think my brother-in-law saw them back then in Portland, OR). I'd still love to see Steve Howe live, he's such an amazing guitarist.

I can see that. He comes across as an odd duck. I love his music though. I was supposed to see him a few years back in Boise, but he ended up canceling his tour after he wrecked his motorcycle.

# 3 - Only Children - Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit
Last one from the newest album by Isbell & the Unit. Just a beautiful ballad that Isbell wrote as a tribute to a friend he had growing up who shared his affinity for writing and passed away too soon.
Growing up in a small town finding a person who shares your interests can be an oasis, especially if your interests are out of the mainstream. Even if you end up apart later in life that bond of "normality" in early life never ends.

Foreigner was one of those bands where I didn't realize I knew them until I heard a lot of their songs in a row and in context. Oh, that's Foreigner? And that one? Oh, and that one? etc, What is there to say about Queen? Such an amazingly talented group. Few if any other groups could successfully pull off so many diverse styles and genres. By nature of them covering such a wide spectrum of styles, they put out a lot of material that didn't do it for me personally, but that's because it's just not my thing, and not because they didn't do it well. But, man, when what they were doing did overlap with what I like, they nailed it. It still blows my mind that Killer Queen and Stone Cold Crazy were on the same album.

# 2 - Drift Away - Dobie Gray
One last 70s soul classic comes in at number two in our countdown (as Casey Kasem might have said).
This is a simple song about music helping to make sense of the world. Or at least giving a release to take us away from the problems of life for a while and an opportunity to tune out the world for the music.
Gray is able to take what was written as a country song and imbue it with soul.

This was a big hit the summer between my junior and senior years of high school. Some of the lyrics really resonated with what I was going thru as I approached the end of compulsory education. Beginnin' to think that I'm wastin' time And I don't understand the things I do The world outside looks so unkind...

# 1 - You Look Good in Neon - Mike and the Moonpies
Mike and the boys' 2018 album "Steak Night the Prairie Rose" absolutely blew me away. Just a great neo-honky-tonk traditional country album. Following that one they snuck off to Abbey Road Studios and recorded "Cheap Silver and Solid Country Gold" which came out in 2019. I initially wasn't thrilled with it. What they were attempting was kind of cool...an updated countrypolitan album, but I wasn't digging it. Initially. But as I kept listening it kept growing on me.
This song would fit in absolutely perfectly on AM country radio in about 1978. Well...except it would blow away most of the rest of what was on the radio at the time. There's just enough honky-tonk on this one to wear off a bit of the polish which is what makes it the stand-out track on the album. And I ended up digging it enough that it ended up here at number one.

Sing-a-long-a-Kynd to my nastiest set of words with this handy-dandy lyric video for our "new" single Get What You Deserve.
This is a special "single version" of the track that was prepared in 1999, but has remained unreleased until now. From today it's available on all your favourite streaming and downloading platforms. Enjoy!

IT'S OUT NOW! Release day is here for the expanded Deluxe Edition reissue of The Kynd's debut album Shakedown. The CD features the 11 tracks from the original 1999 album -- which are all '60s influenced, catchy indie rock songs, with big choruses and lots of energy -- plus 7 bonus tracks (4 previously unreleased), new liner notes and, for the first time, the full lyrics to all the songs. If you fancy buying a copy, it's only £11.99 (which is about $16.70) from the link below. Don't be thrown by the option to pay more at checkout, you only need to pay the £11.99. If you don't have a PayPal account you can still pay for the CD by Debit of Credit card: just click the "Proceed to PayPal" button at checkout and then you'll be given the option to pay by card. Go on, treat yourself! This'll be the last time I spam you all, I promise -- but hey, if you can't spam your friends, who can you spam? Thanks. thekynduk.bandcamp.com/album/shakedown-deluxe-edition

I'm prtty sure I will too, based on the handful of songs I've heard before. Very much my kind of music. Any plans for the band doing a "live" show online as I've read some artists have been doing during the pandemic? I haven't tried any of them yet myself but it sounds like a nice idea, while real concerts are off the table.
