The 1992 series was Aric of Dacia from the 5th century AD captured by aliens. He "steals" the X-O armor to escape. He interacts with other heroes including Gold Key heroes Solar & Magnus.
The 2012 series also features Aric with similar origins. There is a few minor differences. One being this version does not interact with any Gold Key characters.
The 1997 version is scientist Donovan Wylie. The origin of the armor is never fully revealed. I viewed it as an alternate universe in the Valiant Multiverse.
However I still like the 1992 version the best.

Has anyone here even read the 1997 series??
This one is tough for me. I would choose the 1992 series up until around the time Aric started taking on the mafia, at which point he lost the entire outsider appeal that had been my entry point to the series.
The current series is well done but simply doesnt draw me in. I honestly couldn't tell you why. It does everything right.

I heard about it and never got around reading it and all that; the only X-O Manowar that I ever heard was the 1997 version and I only read a couple of issues that was borrowed from friends and did not care for it. I knew that a version in 1992 of which I never, ever read and did not know about the latest one in 2012.
Very Limited Knowledge of this character and according to my friends - I could go for the 1992 version.
I did not vote at all.

I actually have a bunch of that run but either I haven't read them , or it's forgettable. Probably the latter.

The current series is well done but simply doesnt draw me in. I honestly couldn't tell you why. It does everything right. I read the 1997 series. It was done by Mark Waid & Sean Chen & then Brian Augustyn & Scot Eaton. Dwayne McDuffie wrote the last several issues. As I said I viewed it as an alternate earth version. I thought it was pretty good. The armor is unearthed from a WWII Nazi bunker & is studied by scientist Donavan Wylie to understand how it works. Eventually Wylie becomes bonded with the armor. He clashes with the military who want to use it as a weapon. He clashes with Magnus. By issue 12 the aliens that created the armor come to earth to reclaim it.
I felt the same about the 2012 series. I think Robert Venditti was the reason. His writing is just OK. I didn't enjoy his stuff at DC either. I am looking forward to the relaunch in March 2017!

I may review the first issue of all 3 series if I ever get around to reorganizing my closet full of boxes! That box would be all the way in the back on the bottom!

I had never even heard of the line until some point in the last three years, probably due of this community. I'm not sure how well distributed Valiant comics were over here in the UK, but I guess that most comic shops would've carried them. They never leapt out at me and I never heard any of my friends raving about them. Myself, I had a few years off from buying comics in the early 90s and when I returned to the hobby I was reading fairly mainstream Marvel and DC -- things like Untold Tales of Spider-Man, Marvels, Death of Superman or the Jonah Hex minis. The indie titles I enjoyed back then were things like Astro City from Image, Warrior Nun Areala from Antarctic Press, and Oz from Caliber.

I have the first year of X-O from 1992, along with the first year of most of the other early Valiant titles.
I picked all of them up after Crossgen folded and my comics sensei steered me toward Valiant to fill the hole in my shared universe fix at the time.
