Where does it end? This is a question I’ve been asking myself for some time now. I’ve been hitting it pretty hard since 1992 and have been lucky in acquiring many rare and coveted gems from all but the highest echelons of unattainable key books. But am I deriving the same euphoric delight from it that I used to, or is it more of a habit, a compulsion? I’ll be 50 in November. I have a grand-child on the way, my first. I find that chasing comics doesn’t quite ignite the fire in me that it once did. I’ve even begun selling books that just a few years ago I couldn’t have fathomed parting with. My brother and I have agreed that we will finish out the first ten issues of Amazing Spider-Man, of which we lack five. Two years seems like a reasonable amount of time to achieve that end. I’m excited about that collaborative effort, and it feels like a good stopping point. My interest in collecting began with Spider-Man and so it is apt that that is where it should end.

Right now, Phil I'm thinking of stopping altogether and concertrate on Marvel Masterworks and DC Archives from this point on - I'm thinking about selling my entire JLA run of which Grant Morrison did and that's a quarter of my 1,100 floppies that I have and my birthday is coming up and I'll be 58 and it's time that I devote on other things and forget about floppies altogether. I will be selling them soon hopefully in March and cut down the space of Comic Book Clutter in my one bedroom condo. I'm not interested in collecting anymore.

I haven't really "collected" comics for years, and as far as looking for specific back issues goes, I don't have any list or anything.
I still by (paper and digital) books or collections from creators I like. When I'm at a show, I'll spend $10 or so on "reader copies" of things that catch my eye.
While I still can't bring myself to let go of most of my 15-centers or earlier, I'd probably get rid of 80% of the rest of my books at the drop of a hat.

The end game is death... but I am buying most of my old comics in collected editions nowadays; MMW or Omnibus hardcovers, while using Comixology to try out stuff that isn't top of my collecting list, but I still want to read.

I honestly think I am now. Or at least for the foreseeable future. I might aimlessly buy stuff and still get TPB's at the library. But every time I say online "I need to get that" I find that I can never justify it to myself at this point in my life. And when I think I've got 6000 comics and maybe 70 or so TPB that mostly have only been read once; how can I justify buying more. I'm okay that, barring extreme financial duress I'll never sell much of what I have. But I'm not going to buy much of anything else. Maybe Cerebus TPB at some point. But I'm in no rush. And the only goal I had that I put any effort into at any point was owning anything with Starlin's name on it. Otherwise my buying was pretty aimless. You can call us the brothers Grimm.

I don't consider myself a collector. I don't have any specific goals of collecting certain issues or runs beyond what I find fun and interesting to read. There were ever only two specific back issues that I've always wanted to own: Uncanny X-Men #137 and Daredevil #158. I finally own one but I'm not in any particular hurry to search out the other.
That being said, I am two issues short of owning the complete Atari Force series (including the video game comics) and I'm three issues short of owning the complete Shogun Warriors run. One of these days the inspiration may hit me to finish those.

About 4 years ago I was okay just going to shows and picking up stuff to read. But I discovered that you could piece together a Thor run pretty inexpensively. This last year, I started getting Bronze age Superman books, too. I find that when I see how cheap it is to buy those older books, I take the plunge.

This is a great question!
I think I'm actually in the end stages now.
My major goal was to complete a run of Captain America in floppies, which I did. I could try to finish my run of Iron Man in floppies (I'm about 35 shy), but I have all of the stories in Masterworks, so I would just be doing it to say I did it. There are only a handful of Daredevil issues still on the want list, along with a couple of Star Wars, Red Wolf, Frankenstein, Howard the Duck, and Shana issues. Other than that, my interest in buying more books is waning, as I want to start reading what I have to ensure I don't run out of time to do that.
I'm approaching 10,000 individual floppies, but I've been buying fewer individual issues each year over the course of the past five years, just picking up small runs or filling in holes here and there. I have started buying more collected editions while looking to thin out the crap from my collection, books I bought during my major expansion phase from 2003-2010. My goal is to reduce the size of my collection by at least 10% within the next year and another 10% within three.

I'm already collecting Superman Family, so why not go after those issues of Action and Superman published between the departure of Mort Weisinger and, say, the start of the Wolfman/Kane run (which I didn't care for it all)? At the very least, it would add all that lovely Curt Swan art to my collection. Cei-U! I summon the disco-era Man of Steel!

Otherwise I'd pretty much gotten all his older stuff down to just issues that were him doing the cover or inks only; minor stuff like that.

Phil MauriceThe only floppies that I'm keeping is my 126 issue run of JLA done by Grant Morrison. I have 2 sets of copies - One Readable and one for Collection. I'm keeping just the readable and giving away the Collection and everything else. I will be selling everything that I have including my X-Men 13 that got my inspiration for my Username by hondobrode and because my age is approaching 58 and I'm no longer getting floppies anymore and selling my Batman 66 and Wonder Woman 77 as well because there are fans at the store is looking for copies of that books and it's will sell fast. I will be getting cash and store credit so that I can fill in some missing Marvel Masterworks and DC Archives that he has abundance of them. I'm not in the digital world and I hate reading Comic Book online because it's not user friendly to me and I need a screen at least 22 inches or bigger and I do not want to invest in one. Matter of fact, I hate digital comics so bad it's cheapen the thrill of reading comics. So, as it now, I have no Pull List and that's final.

As truly death is the ultimate endgame, then my goal is to have a tomb which rivals the Egyptian Pharoah's and have all my worldly collectible goods buried along with me so i can take them with me. Plus the added bonus of all the traps created to prevent those lazy thieving scum trying to defile my comic book treasure trove. And i will have that wonderful musty old comic book smell entombed with me forever along with the decaying corpses of those tomb raiders. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA

That is a great end goal! Sadly, by the time I might be able to collaborate with my brother on such a task those issues may be the price of a new car
I hope I never want to sell...I love comics so much but I guess everyone moves on as priorities shift through life. I am sure your books are finding new life with collectors who love them as much as you do though. That is what I tell myself when I part with books I don't particularly enjoy collecting. Someone is getting something they really wanted.

That is a great end goal! Sadly, by the time I might be able to collaborate with my brother on such a task those issues may be the price of a new car. Or more. A 9.2 copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 just sold for $246,000 and a 9.2 ASM #1 is being offered for $100K. I can't participate at that level or anywhere close to it. And that's okay. It's not necessary to have the most or the best. All that's required is to love the stuff the way you do, the way most of us do, and have done.

^Exactly!
Plus, and maybe I am weird, but I would rather find and have a copy that is worn...cared for but not museum cared. Maybe a name of the kid who had it originally on the cover, a few creases. One that was read but loved at the same time.
