I've thought about contacting him, but... I don't want to give up the book if he wants it back! ... Maybe he'll make you an offer you can't refuse Do you recall where you picked up the issue? eBay, or a yard sale, comic convention, or...?

I agree. Maybe I am weird but I look at that and wonder what was this comic's life like? Was Denis the original owner? Did his mother sell his comics as he go older? Or perhaps he did? And how many people had it from the time it left Denis until you got it? Does Denis still collect? Oh the questions. I've thought about contacting him, but... I don't want to give up the book if he wants it back! For those who may not be familiar with Denis Kitchen, he was a pioneering indie publisher, founding Kitchen Sink Press in 1969, publishing tons of important comics, collections, and scholarly books about comics for decades, including work by Robert Crumb, and titles like Xenozoic Tales and Omaha the Cat Dancer. Kitchen Sink closed in 1999, but he's still doing lots of stuff in the world of comics: www.deniskitchen.com/
I had no idea thanks for that info!
Do you know 100% it is his? I am sure if it is and you were to just email him, he would be more delighted than anything. Even if he wanted it back, how could he find you? Chances are if he is that into comics he has since replaced that issue...

I have no idea where they got it from, though. Do you know 100% it is his? I am sure if it is and you were to just email him, he would be more delighted than anything. I'm pretty sure it was his. He probably just sold it or traded it away, I just have a worry that, like, it was stolen in 1965 or something and there's going to be some kind of a problem.

Crimebuster , you should send him a pic of the issue--I think in general people get a kick out of seeing long ago artifacts like this. OT-but-in-a-similar vein: A few years ago in The Jack Kirby Collector John Morrow printed some material--a Stan or Jack interview--from a 1960s fanzine that had been put together by a couple of then-teenagers. Morrow had not been able to get in touch with the fanzine's authors (whose names were in the article) and asked for help in getting in touch w/them. I did a quick search and found one of the authors and gave him Morrow's contact info. The fanzine's author was shocked that anyone still had a copy of his home-made fanzine; and he was further shocked to discover the fanzine was on auction sites, etc., and was commanding relatively high prices!

I bought some issues of Uncanny X-Men from a guy a few years back when I was filling holes in my collection. Most of them were late 80s, around the time Jim Lee was making his mark on the books. I was reading one of the issues, when I saw a scribble in ball point on the title page. I started to get annoyed, thinking the guy had sold me a marked up book, when I took a closer look. It turned out it was Jim Lee's autograph.

I just bought an issue of Spider-Woman and thought a previous owner had written his name at the bottom of the splash page, but then I realized it was Bob Wiacek's autograph (It wasn't immediately apparent; looked like "Bob W[scribble]".)
