I like all my comics to be in excellent condition. Worn out comics bug me. I don't feel this way because of resale value. I just want them to look the way they were when I bought them off the rack.
I still have some subscription copies of Swamp Thing that were mine. But that crease down the middle still bothers me.

^Very good point. I get the general consensus that not many people on here are the type to spend $50-100 on a new 9.8 graded variant... or even an older graded book in high grade. It makes me wonder where those collectors "hang out online". Where are all these collectors who buy the latest "hot books" and spend fortunes on things like x-23's first app ($300-400 book last I saw).

Given that my options are either handle my comics with my mouth or not handle them at all, worrying about condition would be a complete waste of my time. The only time I'm really fussy about condition is when the book has some nasty stain that will affect the way it tastes. For the most part, I'm now all about the collections: Essentials, Showcases, and the like. When I do choose to buy originals, I prefer to buy a low grade copy, again because there's no point in buying something in mint when I'm just going to be slobbering all over it anyway.

But I never knew if they tasted differently.

A great many of them have their own Youtube channels where you can see "unboxings" of graded books and haul videos of what they get at cons and shops and have formed communities via Youtube where they network, marvel at each others acquisitions, sell and trade books etc. There are also a ton of facebook groups geared towards that type of collecting etc. That type of collector is actually fairly ubiquitous online. Our community is more the exception than the rule in that many of us don't gravitate towards that type of collecting. -M

True...I have seen a number of Youtube videos and watched a few last year. I still try to keep up on what sells because I do sell a fair bit to try and offset my own purchases but I am far from someone who would drop big money on a book just to have it to show and tell with others.

Condition matters to me but I'm not obsessive about it and I'm pretty forgiving. To me it's really just a matter or classification of "unacceptable", "acceptable", and "wow that's in great shape".

That's kind of how I feel. Also, if I'm holding a particularly old comic in my hands and it's in VF/NM condition, I can for a moment feel like I did just buy it off the rack (whether I originally did or not), which is a neat feeling.

I also assume everyone here gives the old books they buy a quick smell every time we open to read them? Right? It's normal...right?

I try to get the best condition comic I can afford. Especially when I'm trying to complete a series. Most of my Avengers run, 97-300, is VG+to NM. And none of them are CGC graded.
