Superman #19Written by Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason Art by Patrick Gleason Summary: Mister Mxyzptlk strikes bringing Lois and Clark for the Infinite Daily Planet on a quest to save their son before they forget who he is...and who they are. Plot: I said last week that I was glad that Superman Reborn didn't feel like a super-contrived story to bring back the nu-52 Superman, that I felt like rather than, "Surprise! He wasn't dead!" it was some kind dimensional merging and that's exactly what we got here. Courtesy of Mxy we get a slide show of Superman through out the ages, and see their similarities and differences bringing us to the merging at the end but even though my prediction was correct I felt the execution was fumbled. The concept of the infinite planet and all of Superman's collective memories and personalities leaching away this Superman's spirit was ill defined and unless the conclusion plays some serious catch up the merger didn't make a whole lot of sense and I'm not sure how it's going to play out moving forward. Art: I really liked how whimsical Gleason's Mxy was, it felt at times like he was channeling Dr. Seuss which really fits the character well. Grade:6/10

I was very busy today and never made it to the comic shop. Only three of my books came out today, Batman, Kong of Skull Island and Cave Carson.
You'll have to wait to find out what I think of the latest chapter of "I Am Bane."

Archie 18: Archie is on top of the world as Veronica returns to Riverdale. They go on a date and there are some funny moments playing up how clumsy Archie is. Betty and Dilton hang out and discover their mutual attraction. The Blossom Twins "hire" Jughead to find out why their father is lying to them about being broke. Lots happening in this issue and the art by Pete Woods is very attractive and fits the title. I loved the cutaway scenes where something stupid Archie did in the past is shown. Seeing Betty and Dilton was a treat. Looking forward to seeing where that leads. I was expecting a bit more about the Blossom money mystery, but the scenes with Jughead or "Jughandle" and the Blossom Twins were good. 9/10

Trinity #7: Lex Luthor, Circe, and Ra's Al Ghul spend the book discussing their mutual dislike and distrust of each other. Circe lures them to her to reveal Lazarus style pits where some creature that is an amalgamation of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman fights them in scenes that make no sense whatsoever (I admit, I was only half reading this as the story was not holding my attention). At the end of the story, the three of them team up to take down the big 3 and claim the power in the pools for themselves. The art was ok, murky and mysterious which fit the tone of the story. I am very, very disappointed in this title. I was expecting a book about the big 3 to something special, fun, and grand. It started off good enough but has went downhill from there. I dropped Superwoman and Supergirl yesterday. Dropping Trinity next week. 0/10

Dammit, you buy all your digital comics and then you're reminded to recharge your Kindle soon afterwards when it dies. *sigh*

Written by Mark Waid. Art and Cover by Pete Woods. Veronica is back in Riverdale. The page of Archie getting ready for their date cracked me up. They go on their date & the chemistry is gone. Being away changed Veronica. Deep down they both realize that their relationship has changed. Meanwhile Betty & Dilton hang out at a car show. Both have a good time & Dilton asks Betty out on a real date. At first she declines but quickly changes her mind & accepts. Jughead is approached by the Blossom twins to find out why their dad is lying to them. Jughead ruins their efforts in a funny way. Waid is still coming up with new ways to make this title fresh. The addition of Pete Woods on art has also changed things up keeping a fresh yet familiar look to the title. 9/10.

Best Of The Week:Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Art and Cover by Jorge Jimenez. Damian uses Jon to distract Lex while he breaks into Lex Corp. Robin obtains the information he is looking for from Lex's computers. They escape from Lex. Damian explains to Jon they are looking for a kid named Reggie Meyer who still has powers from the Amazo virus Lex released last year. They discover the Meyer family in a reinforced house. All are dead but one...who is missing. While Damian looks around inside the home Jon finds a girl outside in the woods. Just. Freaking. Great. Tomasi nails the different personalities of Jon & Damian. Jon the one that tries to do everything right & please his parents. Damian who wants to impress his Dad but on his terms. They are believable as pre teens IF they had super powers. And Jimenez does something a lot of modern artist can't do. He draws them as kids. Not little adults. Kids. This comic is great fun. 10/10.

Part 2 of how DD got his secret ID back. Written by Charles Soule. Art and Cover by Ron Garney. We find out how the Purple Man escaped his cell. Why 2 of his children sought out Matt. An amazing fight scene that demonstrates DD's fighting skills as well as his moral code. It ends with DD breaking into the Purple Man's lab & DD becoming possessed by the Purple Man. Soule is knocking this arc out of the park. The Purple Man is a creepy villain. Soule explains the villains powers & shows how twisted he is. He also shows how DD tries to do the right thing no matter the cost to himself. Garney sells the story with his rendition of the soulless evil Purple Man & DD's persistence in the face of overwhelming odds. 9/10.

Written by Dan Abnett. Art by Philippe Briones. Cover by Brad Walker and Andrew Hennessy. Aquaman teams up with the very people that tried to assassinate him: The Aquamarines. Why? They are tracking a menace called Dead Water (from Aquaman (2011) # 50-52). It is a tense alliance & all hell breaks loose when they find Dead Water. Abnett finished out the last volume of Aquaman (#49-52) & created this villain. This issue was mostly set up. Abnett created tension & anticipation so that when Dead Water appears you almost feel relief. The rotating art team on this title continue to produce very nice art. 8/10.

And finally one of the best Rebirth titles:
Written by Tim Seeley. Art and Cover by Javi Fernandez.
This arc is shaping up to be the best so far. Seeley is channeling Morrison's awesome Batman & Robin series when Dick & Damian were the Dynamic Duo. I wish Seeley was writing the Batman book as well. I also wish we could have Damian in Nightwing's title every third arc. The two of them together is just like printing money!
10/10.
Dick & Damian spar to pass the time as they fly to Paris to find Shawn. When they arrive a sick distorted version of Nightwing attacks them. It calls itself Death Wing. Death Wing is a twisted evil mirror version of Nightwing. Damian becomes trapped in a coffin & breaks out to find Nightwing on the verge of a mental breakdown when a twisted version of Dick as Robin enters. Dick realizes Shawn has been kidnapped by a villain he & Damian fought when they were Batman & Robin....

Alright, now that the Kindle has been recharged, some thoughts on issues already under review:
Super-Sons #2 - Agreed, absolutely one of the best books of the week. Tomasi is nailing Jon and Damian's partnership (can you call them friends yet?), from their quips to their differences. After acquiring info from Luthor in a brash fashion, the duo stumble across a deadly threat, prompting Jon to want to call in their fathers and maybe even the League (y'know, the proper thing to do?) while Damian only wants to use this as a way to prove his worth to his dad BEFORE calling in the cavalry. A nice callback to a previous Justice League arc, this was fun, funny and the art was dynamic.
10/10
Superman #19 - This event is turning out better than first thought. The reveal of Mxy (and his reasons for why he's doing this) were very good last week but here, things do get a bit muddled. In striving to reach Jon, I wish we could have seen more of Superman and Lois fighting to keep memory of not only their son but of themselves as well. It's like you can see where the story was going but somehow the path there got twisted when it could've been better. Still, the last shot of Jon with his parents(?!) holds out hope and interest for a great ending to this event.
7/10
Daredevil #18 - This was a stronger second part to this arc. Soule does very good in outlying how and why Killgrave may indeed be one of the most dangerous people on the planet. The scenes with Matt protecting some of the Purple Children and Kirsten from the mob of ordinary people that Killgrave ordered after them was chilling. It also showed power and restraint on the part of Matt by his subduing these innocents with as little as harm as possible (though his realization that any harm these people might incur, they'll remember as coming from Matt Murdock was also chilling).
The cliffhanger ending was good, loved Matt's dialogue of "I don't remember this part...I was told it later." After a semi-rough start to this series, Garney seems to have really settled in with his art and the combo with Milla's coloring here, especially in regards to the usages and displays of purple, give this arc an unsettling feel to match the story line.
8/10

Amazing Spider-Man #25 - Oh boy, issue #25. You know what that means...Special Anniversary edition! This extra-sized comic comes with two main stories and a few vignettes. The main story features Peter, still reeling from the emotional turmoil incurred by Clone Conspiracy, deciding to stop problems like that before they can even blossom. Using info gleaned from Kingpin, Peter's first target: Norman Osborn. With the help of Mockingbird and SHIELD, Peter tries to capture Osborn, runs into trouble (of course) but is really surprised when he discovers the identity of a new player also in the Osborn hunt, someone thought to be long dead. Is this somehow related to Ben Reilly's previous scheme? Unknown but it was great seeing this female fatale alive again (at least for the moment)
The second story features Doc Ock, who survived his final battle with Reilly by stealing (ie possessing) an uber proto-clone of Peter that Miles Warren was working on and whom Otto perfected. He has the powers and abilities of Peter while looking mostly like a younger, healthy version of himself. Retreating to plot his next move, Otto runs afoul of a HYDRA cell. Easily defeating them, Otto then secures their help and alliance in creating a new identity for himself (Anyone else feeling Superior, hm?), presenting a new problem for Spider-Man that looks to erupt about the same time the Secret Empire event takes place.
The vignettes were fun, playful and showcased Peter's faith in people, Aunt May, and dogs. White Rabbit even appears, anyone else remember her? I recall an issue of Marvel Team-Up with her as the villain but I can't remember who Spidey was teamed up with against her.
A double-sized issue (for double the price *sigh*) but Slott advances his plots well, laying the groundwork for the next round of Parker's usual luck.
7/10 (could've been an 8 without vignettes really)
Wild Storm #2 - Okay, let's face the heart of the matter, this was an all talking issue with hardly any action. Angela retreats to lick her wounds at an abandoned IO base while the hunt for her heats up big time. Marlowe recruits Cole Cash and his team in tracking her down while Zealot is assigned the case of Marlowe's assassination while the head of IO zeroes in on Angela's whereabouts. Oh, and Michael Cray discovers a health problem.
A whole issue featuring talking heads sounds boring, but Ellis being Ellis, he makes the talking interesting and provoking. The underlying truce between these warring covert factions appears broken by Angela's actions and now tensions (and emotions) are rising. Hunt's art remains clean and concise, and detailed (though he does the best he can with various angles and actions with a cast of talking people).
7/10
