I liked the letters pages a lot, but it could be that my memory is over-emphasising the exceptions and ignoring all the mediocre ones. But a lot of my favourite series, or eprhaps it,s more accurate to say writers, tended to attract some very intelligent and thoughtful letter responses - Gerber, Englehart, Moench on MoKF and WbN, Wolfma on ToD, McGregor on Killraven and the Black Panther, ...
But yeah, it's quite possible that the average letters page on, I don't know, Spider-Man or something, might not have been all that interesting. And I can't think of any DC books that had exceptionally good letters pages - but then I didn't read a lot of them. I'll find out if I ever get around to re-reading all my back-issues!

I love reading the Spider's Web & Let's Level with Daredevil letters pages in the Omnibus volumes, it's like a step back in time... although I suspect some of the letters were made up!

Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. ultimate collection includes the letters pages from the series. Compiled and answered by the Lettermatic 7053 (who I presume was Warren Ellis), they are as enjoyable as the stories themselves. One letters page was only a review of the Toto song "Africa." Another answered mail from Julius Caesar, and another included a letter from the year 2150.

I picked it up because it is regarded so highly and it stars Monica Rambeau, one of my favorite characters. Well, it mis-characterizes her, but it mis-characterizes everyone you recognize. That's part of the joke. It's intended to be over the top to an absurd degree, and the letters page fits right in. Anyway, to answer the question in your original post, I think letters aren't included in collections because publishers want to limit page count and keep costs down--as someone already mentioned. But letters pages can also really interrupt a story in a collection. Reading a multi-part Usagi Yojimbo epic in a TPB would be a disjointed experience if I came to a letters page every 22 pages. Now, if all the letters pages were grouped in the back matter, I would love that.

I freakin' love Nextwave, and it would be nice to have it all in one volume.) Squirrel Girl trades reprint the letter pages, too. I only buy one Marvel comic monthly, but I get it in both singles and hardcovers. I am vastly more interested in anthologies that reprint the letter pages. As the "Comic Lovers Memories" thread reminds me, it just isn't Silver Age DC if you don't have Mort Weisinger being a dick to eight year olds.
